Numbers 3.6 Cut & Copy Broken

I am running El Capitan 10.11 and Numbers 3.6. Every time I try to Copy or Cut the entry in a cell, the app quits. I have trashed the Preference files, run DiskUtility First Aid and re-booted. No effect. Press Cmd-C or Cmd-X and the application quits. Select Cut or Copy on the drop-down Edit menu and it quits.

Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

Good question. It happens in all cells, regardless of content. It won't let me cut, copy or drag the contents. Not even an option-drag. As soon as you touch Cmd C or X the app shuts down with no delay. After I posted my problem, I found that it only happened in documents that had been generated before the last Numbers update. I have had no problems with docs created with the new version. As a work around, I used Time Machine to restore a document from before the update, trashed Numbers 3.6 and restored the previous version of the app. Found to my disgust that it would not open any of my older spread sheets. Implementing 3.6 has done something weird. Beats me. I don't even want to think of the work involved in recreating big spread sheets when you can't copy and past anything.

Have you tried uninstalling the app and redownloading it from the Mac App Store? To uninstall, go to Launchpad and hold down the option key until the icons shake, then click the 'x' by the Numbers icon.

Also you could try running Numbers in another user account on the same machine to see if the problem exists there too.

Yeah, reinstalled a number of times. No good. I did find another workaround that can save some time in "copying" data to a new spreadsheet.

Open the print dialogue for the corrupted sheet and select PDF/Open as PDF. You can copy the entire PDF and paste it into a new spreadsheet. At least you can quickly recover text and data entries. The bad news is that you lose all your links and formulas. Still, it is better than nothing. I think the problem may derive from multiple migrations stretching back to the days of MS Excel. I'm surprised it hadn't broken sooner.

I have this problem as well. I tried to duplicate a tab and the app crashed. I tried to delete a tab that was no longer needed and the app crashed. I tried inserting a blank tab and that worked but when I tried to copy the formulas from another tab, it crashed again. This is very frustrating needless to say. I assume this is part of the El Capitan "upgrade" and a revision to fix the problems will come out soon...hopefully!

Not that this is much comfort but it does not seem to be a universal problem, at least not so far as I can tell. I opened a Numbers '09 spreadsheet and was able to copy/paste and to duplicate a sheet. I did the same with a Numbers 3 spreadsheet. This was with Numbers 3.6 that I just downloaded an hour or so ago, and with El Capitan 10.11.

Do you have documents open in Numbers to load when you launch Numbers? If so, try to save then then launch Numbers while holding the shift key.

After that I would trash all preferences files.

select the Finder menu item "Go > Go To Folder…"

then type in the path:

"~/Library/Preferences/" (leave out the double quotes)

now locate files starting with:

com.apple.iWork.Numbers

and move then to the Desktop (you can restore them or trash depending on outcome)
