Oct 17, 2015 2:55 PM in response to hpgoby Allan Eckert,If you go to the App Store you can download a newer version of OS X.
You will need to know what version you Mac can support. Since you failed to give us any detail on exactly which model of MBP you have, can help you there.

Oct 17, 2015 2:56 PM in response to hpgoby Niel,Open the Mac App Store and try downloading El Capitan. If you get told that it's incompatible with your computer, so is the iPhone 6S; if you have a compatible Mac but don't want to upgrade all the way to it, the online Apple Store sells download codes for Mountain Lion 10.8.
Back up your data and check your applications for compatibility before upgrading. In particular, Mac OS X 10.7 and newer don't support PowerPC programs such as versions of Microsoft Office prior to 2008.
