I would like to publish a book with characters from a TV series. How do I do that?

I am an aspiring writer and I am writing a book based on characters from two Television series. I would like to publish it via the iTunes Book store but I would also very much not want to go to jail for doing so.

How do I properly handle copyrighted material with a fictional book and also, can I sell my book for money on the iTunes Bookstore?
