Q: Using iCloud for storage without mirroring files on my device hard drives - possible?

I was using iCloud for general storage of files and documents from my various devices. Eventually I noticed my macbook air becoming very slow, and discovered that the entire iCloud directory structure and files were mirrored on all my device hard drives, and could be accessed even offline. As my Macbook Air has a relatively small hard drive (250GB) I had to revert to using an alternative solution for storage and reduce the size of my iCloud storage overall.

Ideally, I would prefer to keep all my data together, and to utilise iCloud - does anyone know if it is possible to drag and drop files onto the iCloud storage without them being mired on my device hard drives as well?

If you do not want the shadow copies of iCloud drive files  on your Mac, you must not enable iCloud Drive on the Mac. Use only the web interface at

    https://www.icloud.com/#iclouddrive

But then you will have to use the upload and download buttons to manage the files on iCloud Drive and your applications will not be able to access the documents directly in iCloud to edit them.
