i've been struggling to export movies in 1080p, which i have done before so i don't think my footage is the problem. when i create a movie it's automatically set for 720p and i've been tinkering around trying to change it to 1080p but so far nothing has worked.

If 1080p is unavailable when you export it may be because there is lower quality content in the project you are attempting to export. The highest quality available for export depends on the lowest quality in the project you are exporting.

before even importing my footage into imovie, the project created is already set at 720p and won't change. i don't have any problem exporting to 1080p when uploading footage from the same camera with the same settings to windows movie maker. i don't think my footage is the problem !

Here is why your project settings are set at 720

The resolution and frame rate of your movie project are determined by the first clip you add to the timeline. iMovie now supports 4K video and frame rates higher than 30 frames per second (fps). If you want your project to be set to 4K resolution, the first clip you add to the timeline must be a 4K clip. If you want your project to be set to 60 fps, the first clip you add to the timeline must be a 60 fps clip.
This might also explain why you can not export to 1080
imovie only creates movies in 720p but i need 1080p
