This is my very first Reply to any problems in the Apple Support Community, so I am sorry if I am wrong or if it does not work.

I had the same problem when trying to backup my iPad. I read somewhere on another support site that turning off Background App Refresh worked for one of the people posting there. So I tried it and it worked.

I don't remember where I saw Background App Refresh on my iPad. But on my iPhone 5s, if I go to the following, it is showing here: Settings, General, Background App Refresh. Don't forget to turn App Refresh back on after backup if you need that feature active.

I sincerely hope that this works for you, and I apologize if anyone else has already suggested it, or if the problem has already been resolved.

I am unaware of any updates to fix this as of January 2nd, 2016.

I am still having the same issues. Having completed several network resets, deleting of unused back-ups, hard resetting, and finally deleting the most recent back-up after the wait period and then conducting an attempted back-up with no luck.

I have also completed a factory reset and re-installed everything from an iTunes back-up and iCloud still fails at completing a back-up.

As of right now (1/2/16), Chat Support tells me that they are "working on it" aka tough doo-doo.

    Any other ideas?

Same with me on an iPhone 6s. Wasted tremendous amount of time trying to do what should be the most basic of functions. "error" messages singularly unhelpful. More than disappointed with Apple.

Same here. Can't enable iCloud Backup. Talked to Apple, done a full restore with no success.

I am also having this issue. I went to delete the old back up to free up some space because this 16GB phones are actually pathetic when it comes to storage so I thought I'd free some up from icloud for emails, pictures, ect and it wouldn't let me re enable icloud backup. Since this seems to be a huge issue among Apple users, I don't think I'll contact Apple Support, might wait until the next update since they won't recognize this annoying problem. I still have my photos, emails, it saved my settings when I totally reset the phone back to factory settings to start the process all over again thinking it would manipulate the phone into enabling backup so this is obviously a software issue. I'm not real sure what else to do about this, I literally just got this iphone 6s Plus not even a month ago. From what I've read on multiple posts, there seems to be no solution.

I had the same problem with my iPhone 6.   The only way I could get a back up to complete was to exclude photos from the back.  Since iCloud photos was also disabled, this was not a viable solution, as I wanted a backup of my photos.   In the end, I deleted all the backups for my phone and enable iCloud photos.   Once I did this I was able to do a full regular back up on my phone.    Note that this started with the iOS 9 .0 update and persisted through three subsequent updates.

Bottom line for me: enable iCloud photos before backup

I have been having this problem for 20 weeks now.  The only reason I know it has been 20 weeks is a pop up shows up on my phone and tells me so.  It won't even let me back up to iTunes.  I called apple in december 2015 and they told me in two weeks there would be a fix.  Just waiting for two weeks to get here.

Not being able to backup to icloud has returned for me. It actually worked 10 days out of 2 weeks and I was real happy thinking the ios 9.2.1 had finally fixed the problem, but of course not. The phone has not backed up for 6 days now. Strangely, the photostream has also stopped working. I don't know if the two are related, but it's extremely frustrating. I haven't been able to get the icloud backup to work consistently since updating to 9.0 back in October, but now the photostream doesn't work either. Has anyone actually found a consistent fix for this problem?

well after having no icloud backup since 27 Dec last year i had tried everything, other than call apple(even threw away my 9.02 jb ),

cut a long long story short i eventually had the notion too try the  'icloud control panel tool' for windows, deleted the backup of many many, dare i say 'every' error from not being backed up since Dec 27 every week notification nothing turn on or off constant error messages at every turn, immediately went into my 5s and hit backup now manual backup, it was saying it had an hour to go but then stopped with the failed to complete error, but a step forward at least, thought id share that in-case it helps anyone who is affected by this nightmare maybe find the "actual" fix

    /peace

PS. its at 50 mins again and trying at-least, which is better than every error at every step!!

oh and its at 26 mins now tho it used to take mere minutes
