Q: garageband loops

Where does one put free non Apple loops (sometimes available as mp3)? Where do I put sampled instruments like the Bosendorfer, Yamaha which I had for one of the previous GarageBand versions? Can I install these again? Or are they available in new versions?

The app seems to want to download all Apple loops again when clicking restore sound library, so it doesn't look for missing loops. How many loops should there be in a new installation?

Install additional loops in your user library, the folder "Library" in your home folder.

    Loops go into ~/Library/Audio/Apple Loops/

    and additional instruments into ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/

It will depend on the type of the sounds, if they should go into ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Components or into ~/Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/VST/

Thanks, Léonie, I'll check it out.

I had the free mp3 samples under Apple loops, but they don't show up there. I'll try the other locations.

After installing the loops rebuild the Loop Index.  https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201368

To reindex the Apple Loops library, click Loops at the top of the Loop Browser. Then, choose Reindex All Loops from the pop-up menu.

Done that several times, Léonie, but to no avail.

There are lots of loops in folders in the library (not my home folder, there is practically no GB stuff there and if I put some there by dropping a loop in the loops window, it doesn't show up), some items are in Garageband, but many are not. Adding them to the list doesn't work. Adding them from the jam pack folder to the Apple loops garageband folder and reindexing doesn't work. So it seems Apple has removed and blocked lots of loops in the latest version. I've got 4300 items, but there should be more.

Does Apple sell new jam packs? It doesn't seem so.

All in all a big disappointment. I fear I will have to miss my Bosendorfer and other instruments as well.

OK, I managed to get the other files in the list by going to prefs and removing the filter.

    So far so good. Thanks.

Do you have a filter set in the GarageBand Preferences > Loops panel?

The Jam Packs were purchased separately and are not part of GarageBand.

You can install the JamPack Loops also in the System Library, the top level Library folder of your MacintoshHD :

My JamPack Loops are installed here: /Library/Audio/Apple Loops/Apple/

And the Jam Pack Sounds in the Instrument Library:   /Library/Library/Application Support/GarageBand/Instrument Library/Sampler/

Could you compare your current Loop Library and Instrument Library with a backup from your previous version?

I took the easy way out and purchased MainStage from the AppStore. It reinstalled all five JamPacks, so I could use them in GarageBand as well.

Thanks, Léonie, you've been a great help. My jam packs loops are all visible now.

I also have a sampler files folder, but I haven't figured out yet how to easily get at them in Garageband.

I'd better buy me the most recent manual so I haven't to experiment too long.

I see, we've been cross posting. You already found the filter

I also have a sampler files folder,

The Sampler Files folder needs a Sampler Instruments folder as well, as shown in my screenshot.

Do you still have the installers for your loops and sounds?  Some of the JamPack installers do no longer work, because they call PowerPC code, but there has been a work-around posted in this forum a few years ago. Perhaps you can find it.

Yes, I have just installed the original packages from the DVD (dated 2005!) and lo and behold, the Bosendorfer, Old Lady, Yamaha, Emperor and Steinway D all installed without a problem in the sampler instruments. I am so happy. They are EXS24 files. Thanks.

All my jam packs are loaded.

And mp3, wav and aif files can be imported by dropping them in the main (instruments) window.
