I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" running El Capitan on a wifi network using an Airport Extreme. I can't seem to get Airplay to work. Under settings the only option showing is "off". My iPad Air is able to run Airplay with my Apple TV. What is going on and how do I fix it?

No need to respond. During an update McAfee changed my home network from Home/Work to Public, which made my computer non-discoverable on the network blocking Airplay from working.
same here. elcapitan. airplay off. cannot turn on anywhere. please help!
Same problem! My Apple reseller can't fix it either. Tested on an OSX older than El Capitan (in separate partition) and then Airplay did work!
Did a full re-install of El Capitan BUT that did NOT solve the problem, Airplay still only shows as OFF in settings!
Please...HELP!

I had the same problem. Updated my Apple TV with the new software and the AirPlay prompt appeared on my macbook air.
