I am trying to configure my new apple watch, but cannot get applications I want on. Also, it is impossible for me to listen to the workout music from the iPhone, even though it has synced. Also, my watch is connected to my phone but not to the wi-fi. I have been trying it since I bought it yesterday. How disappointing!
Can anyone please help me?

Have you tried restarting your watch? Force restarting?
Not all apps for the iPhone will appear on the Watch. Apps including a Watch version will indicate that in the App Store with the phrase "Offers Apple Watch App for iPhone":
If a Watch-compatible app is installed on your iPhone it will automatically appear on your Watch. Click the above image for an example. It's free.
iTunes Music on your does not play on the Watch's speaker. You can use the Watch to control the iTunes Music playing on your iPhone though, which can in turn use Bluetooth or AirPlay to stream to any of those devices.
The Watch will connect to Wi-Fi networks as long as your iPhone connected to them in the past: About Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on Apple Watch - Apple Support. If your iPhone is within BT range though, the Watch will drop the Wi-Fi connection in favor of BT for power considerations. That ensures your Watch will remain in communication with your iPhone if they are in close proximity to each other, or if they are both within range of the same wireless network.

Thanks for all your help John. I was able to sync it yesterday. Since it was podcasts that I was trying to sync, I didn't realise that each was about an hour long and it exceeded the available storage space I allotted it. In the end it all worked out just fine, I just used fewer. The watch together with the beats headphones was absolutely wonderful for my workout! It worked like charm.:-)
I love my watch now! Cannot believe I lived without it before. No more near misses with iPhone falling out of my back pocket or fidgeting with the earphones cables while running.
It is a pity the watch was not fully charged as I bought it, because then I could have been helped in the apple shop already. But I was in the rush to go home, so a bit my fault too.
Thanks for making it clear that not all apps are compatible with the watch. I understand it now and I hope many will become so in the near future.

It's normal for Apple to ship the Watch with only a partial charge. Apple Watches don't tend to sit in inventory for very long, but it's not a good idea to leave the type of battery it uses either fully charged or fully discharged for extended periods of time (more than a few days).

I agree. Apple Pay alone has become indispensable to me.
