2014 Macbook Pro Retina 15" Freezes and Lockups - Safari Console Errors

I had some issues with my 2014 Macbook Pro Retina 15" randomly locking up when I first got it. I had to restart. I haven't seen this issue in quite a while (months) and stacked it up to a bug that was fixed in Yosemite. I did a clean El Capitan install a couple of weeks ago. Immediately after install, I didm't see issues. i'm seeing problems again now. The only app I consistently see causing the issue is Safari, but I really can't nail it to Safari yet.

I'm attaching messages I've gotten when the problems occurred while typing this post along with a couple of Console pics to show what I've seen in other freeze-ups. I've also detailed what is happening as the errors occur while writing this post. When I restart, I expect that the problem will disappear for a while, then show back up later today.

Here's how the problem goes. I'm using the machine as normal - Internet, sometimes other apps. Suddenly all freezes. I can't do anything. A few seconds later (sometimes up to 1 minute or so), computer is usable again. Occasionally, Safari will be function very slowly afterward. If I type, letters appear very slowly (just happened as I was typing this explanation. I hit the "edit my products" link below - as I started typing the changes...complete crawl). More typically, I'll go about my business for another freeze happens again.

Still no responses. Hmmmm..

I'm following up. I'm seeing this issue happening mostly when Safari is involved. I've turned off the 2 extensions I had (Omnikey and LastPass) and restarted Safari - didn't help. When I quit Safari and go to the same sites in Chrome, I'm not having an issue so far.

If I reopen Safari, the slow ups and lock-ups start again.

Here's what I'm seeing through the issues in Console:

QUITE SAFARI after the last line - Now I'm not seeing the problem again.

Oct 23, 2015 12:19 PM in response to Adam F

I'm having the same issue. I have a 2012 rMPB and the problem only occurs when I have dynamic video card switching enabled. If I lock it to discrete it doesn't happen. In my case I believe it's a problem with the hardware. I took it to the Apple store a couple weeks ago and they ran their diagnostics for 24 hours, but couldn't duplicate the problem. They told me to format and do a fresh install. I completed that a couple days ago and just had my first crash a few minutes ago. I guess it's time to make another Genius Bar appointment.

Oct 23, 2015 12:26 PM in response to Adam F

TODAY is my 3rd day using Chrome instead of Safari. (Safari has launched a couple of times but I've immediately turned it back off.) I've got all the same apps running outside of Safari. I'll update again soon. Can't believe nobody else has chimed in here. I can't be the only person seeing the issue.

UPDATE:

I JUST had the lock-up again. It lasted nearly a minute. This is the FIRST time in days...and I happened to have inadvertently used Safari when the problem occurred. Again, as mentioned above, I haven't seen the issue the entire time I've been using Chrome. SAFARI must be the culprit. I think I can narrow it down a bit further. I was using Safari for YouTube and I have NOT installed Flash.

I think this needs to be moved to the Safari thread at this point. I'm not sure how to do that.

hey dude, I've had the exact same issues as you on the exact same device. I haven't run any diagnostics regarding this though because I have been dealing with an epic hack...one that's taken over this laptop, my iMac, my iPad, has my current iPhone compromised (including tapped) and I have that iPhone because my previous iPhone was hacked at a level that no one would believe if I just told them. It was so insane, that I actually grabbed every recording device that was around and began simultaneously recording everything as it was happening. Needless to say, I have about 5 and a half hours or more of some super f'ed up stuff going down and that is all overlapping footage taken from my gf's (well, ex gf now haha) phone, my macbook and then a completely separate camera that was totally offline and that couldn't be compromised. Long story short, I have whole bunch of super cool I was working on getting patented and then this epic take over of everything I have began....I guess there is apparently someone that got super "anti" in regards to me getting this out to the world. It's been whack to say the least, but whatever...I'll still get this stuff out there no matter how many restarts I have to do! haha...

ANYWAY, sorry for that ramble but it wasn't entirely all for not. See, with all of that other stuff going on, I didn't feel that when I had the type of issue you have been experiencing, that it was associated with anything other than the hackers (whether it was a full take over, watch overload or DDoS. However, it seems that this could be an additional error I need to take a look at because I definitely need to minimize the amount of restarts or freezes, which may in fact speed some of my other traceroutes up....something that I can only hope for because that would be like the ultimately belated Christmas gift to myself! haha...I'll run some tests and do the whole checks and balances deal over the next few days or week and see if anything catches my eye outside of the norm. I'll let you know if anything jumps out at me!

And I should ask, because your post is a bit old....did you ever fix your issue? If so, please let me know...if not, have you even thought of a possible intruder on your system/network? Just wondering because if you have any info it can help me streamline my efforts or give me some sort of jolt to light up my brain toward querying something else. Hope all is good!
