Q: serious help needed after update and restore stuck in recovery mode

Hi All

I am trying to sort a friends old Ipad out !!!!!!.

what I have done so far

I connected it to Itunes via my windows laptop which uses Windows 10

I then reset to factory set up ipad worked and was using 4.3.4

I was unable to load Skype due to the version being so old .and needed a newer IOS

I attempted to update via Itunes site  as it said V 9 was available

it initially went though the update and restore but failed showing error 9  and suggested it needed to be totally reset to factory settings .

I then tried to restore but it again failed and now seems to be locked in the recovery mode ie Itunes and Plug visable on screen but cannot get any further.

I then tried it connected to my My desktop PC ( Windows 7)

still no joy .

I then tried it on my neighbours Mac no joy there .

I then borrowed a USB to 32pin lead with the same results  so proved that the connecting cable is OK

I then after some research on line tried again Being very care full connecting the lead first to the PC  and then then holding down the home button before

and not releasin the home button untill the itunes  and Plug appeared the PC recognised the Ipad and went through the resore process again .

Still the same results unable to restore error (9).

At this point I gave in and phoned Support who while being very helpful and confirmed I had done everything correctly said it looked as it would have to go for repair at an Apple store  BUT as It is 5-6 years old and obviously out of any warrantee is going to cost   and probably more than can be justified on a 5-6 year old piece of equipment .

HELP PLEASE as I fear a dustbin and matches are about to appear in my Future

Mike

    See:

    Check your security software

    Errors: 2, 4, 6, 9, 1611, 9006.

Sometimes security software can stop your device from communicating with either the Apple update server or with your device.

Check your security software and settings to make sure that they aren't blocking a connection to the Apple servers.

If you still see the error message, check for USB connection issues.

(From Get help with iOS update and restore errors - Apple Support)

Even if your device is out of warranty, you can schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar for free.

The experts at the store told my mother that she could turn in her iPad 2 and they would "recycle" it. This is obviously a software upgrade issue that needs to be fixed instead of forcing people to buy new iPads because theirs are out of warranty and the new IOS screwed it up. It worked perfectly fine before the upgrade.  Why in the world have they changed things so that people aren't allowed to go back to an older version of software until they get the bugs worked out? Restore AND update is the only option, not restore to factory settings...

    Hi

If you connect your friends ipad to your PC he may get

    Your data off your itunes.

I had a case the other day were it had changed the Apple id

To the PCs owner Apple id.

    Just bear this in mind.

    Cheers

    Hi

    Just try this.

    Turn iPad OFF

Connect lead to USB on PC

Press & hold power button Don't let go on ipad

Connect lead to ipad keep power button pressed down.

Until PC sees ipad then wait fo restore .

You may need to do this a few times before it works .

Before you do this make sure you have latest itunes

    On your PC .

    Cheers
