Can you get metronome in headphones but not through speakers while playing?

I was wondering if, for performance purposes, one could get the metronome click through headphones while having no click track go through the main speaker. Obviously this would allow counting precisely without the sound getting in the way... Thanks for any help.

Go to File>Song Settings>Metronome & click in the box 'Metronome plays through built-in speakers'
There are one or two other useful settings for the metronome in that window.

You can have the metronome play from the computer speakers, so if you have a pair of headphones that will plug into your computer, you should be able to select those in the Systems Preferences if the signal is not routed there automatically.

I clicked the built in speakers option but it still plays through both. right now i have a y-plug in my laptop headphone jack. Plugged into that are my headphones and a converted quarter inch plug that runs to the amplifier's input. Anything else i might be doing wrong? Thanks for helping thus far...

What kind of setup are you running?

Audio Interface? Or just through the computer's built in?

It's not really clear what exactly you are trying to do. Do you want just the click to come through the headphones or the click and music? Is this so you can listen on the main speakers while a performer is listening to their own different mix in the headphones?

The music is going through a large speaker amp. I am trying to get the metronome click only in the headphones, and not through the speaker (with the rest of the music, what the listener can hear). I'm not sure what you mean by what setup and interface I am using. I am running on Mac OS X 10.4.8, and am only using my iBook G4, the speaker, my headphones, and the subsequent cables (all 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch) as equipment.

Have you got any audio/MIDI firewire interface connected to your laptop? EG I use a MOTU 828 to input all MIDI & audio. It also connects the computer to my amp & speakers so that no music comes through the computer speakers. This keeps the metronome separate from the audio playback.
If you are just using the computers mic input/output, I think you will not be able to separate the metronome from the main signal.

I haven't figured out how to split the sound, having the metronome to the computer speakers and the rest of the song into the amp... still confused...
