Q: share function not working

I have been using the share to [notes, mail messages] functionality from safari.  This evening I have tried to share to notes in safari, but nothing happens, the icon greys out and all functionality is lost resulting in me having to quit safari.  Share to mail does not work either.  I have also check from finder, and notes and every time i try and share the same thing happens i.e. greying out and losing functionality.  I have tried logging out of iTunes, restarting and switching off plugins and switching them back on again to no avail.

In addition the same thing happens on my mac and macbook pro.  Any help would be gratefully received.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2013), OS X El Capitan (10.11)

All of the items appear.  The only one that works is add to bookmark.  All of the others cause the button to grey out and does not allow any further functionality resulting in the app having to quit from the menu.

If it helps I cannot share a file to mail either....

In case anybody else has this issue I restarted the Mac holding down cmd and R to enter OS X Utilities.  I reinstalled OS X and everything works again.

I know I'm a few months late to the party, but re-installing OSX is a little extreme for my taste. Has anyone else encountered this issue? I upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan instead of performing a clean install. In Safari, my workaround is to press CMD + N and then focus on the new window, choose Window -> Merge All Windows to regain control of the browser.

I have the exact same problem and the solution of cut and paste command line into terminal from apple did not work for me. Very very frustrating!

You don't have to install OS X, and the Apple HT203129 article does not always go far enough to provide the solution to these missing Share menu items. If the items are actually available, but unchecked in System Preferences : Extensions : Share Menu, then check them, reboot, and reassess if they now show up on your application's Share menu.

If paragraph one is insufficient to fix the missing Share menu items, then the following has proven to be a solution in the support communities that goes further than Apple's recommendation above. Again, one opens the Terminal application (Launchpad : Other : Terminal), and then copy/pastes the command sequence from the following into the Terminal command line. Reboot your Mac afterwards, and visit the preceding Extensions preference panel to check the Share menu items that were missing.

I can not use the "share" functionality from Photos, Preview or Finder.

As described, when I try to share via mail, new mail window does not appear and share functionality is no longer available.

Photos and preview both need to be "force quit" to quit, then re-openned before I can do anything else.

    Finder needs a re-launch.

    How do I fix this?

    This has helped some.

Sharing options and Markup are missing after you install OS X Yosemite       also El Capitan
