share function not working

I have been using the share to [notes, mail messages] functionality from safari. This evening I have tried to share to notes in safari, but nothing happens, the icon greys out and all functionality is lost resulting in me having to quit safari. Share to mail does not work either. I have also check from finder, and notes and every time i try and share the same thing happens i.e. greying out and losing functionality. I have tried logging out of iTunes, restarting and switching off plugins and switching them back on again to no avail.

In addition the same thing happens on my mac and macbook pro. Any help would be gratefully received.

For me the Share menu option Messages just stalls. Using the Share button on an app, for example sharing a note to messages with the button, not only stalls but from that point forward, clicking on the same button just makes the system beep sound. Quitting the app and relaunching it returns the share menu operation but not for Messages which just fails whenever it is used.

This failure is not limited to the app that I am in. All source apps for the Share function cannot share to Messages.

What I have noticed is that a process called "Messages Share Extension" can be seen in some utilities (like iPulse) but not in Activity Monitor. That by itself is a red flag for Activity Monitor.

Anyway, the "Messages Share Extension" comes up, eats 100% of the CPU, then when it is gone, the Share button works again (the Share button can be pressed without it beep at you).

Under no circumstance does the Share function to Messages from any app work under any scenario so far. Messages seems to work ok...

I have tried the lsregister command line fix, no difference. Tried deleting all the system caches ( in /System/Library/Caches/ ) and rebooting, no difference. I have tried disabling all my launch agents, login items, quick look plugins, Safari extensions and internet plugins (worth a try), all the app "Services", Siri, Spotlight plugins. And no effect.

I'm resisting a "Window's Hail Mary" (reinstall the operating system).

I know I'm a few months late to the party, but re-installing OSX is a little extreme for my taste. Has anyone else encountered this issue? I upgraded from Yosemite to El Capitan instead of performing a clean install. In Safari, my workaround is to press CMD + N and then focus on the new window, choose Window -> Merge All Windows to regain control of the browser.

You don't have to install OS X, and the Apple HT203129 article does not always go far enough to provide the solution to these missing Share menu items. If the items are actually available, but unchecked in System Preferences : Extensions : Share Menu, then check them, reboot, and reassess if they now show up on your application's Share menu.

If paragraph one is insufficient to fix the missing Share menu items, then the following has proven to be a solution in the support communities that goes further than Apple's recommendation above. Again, one opens the Terminal application (Launchpad : Other : Terminal), and then copy/pastes the command sequence from the following into the Terminal command line. Reboot your Mac afterwards, and visit the preceding Extensions preference panel to check the Share menu items that were missing.

I can not use the "share" functionality from Photos, Preview or Finder.

As described, when I try to share via mail, new mail window does not appear and share functionality is no longer available.

Photos and preview both need to be "force quit" to quit, then re-openned before I can do anything else.

Finder needs a re-launch.

How do I fix this?
