Q: Battery life

Hi guys.

I just bought a new early 2015 MPB 13 with retina display, 2.7Ghz, 256 SSD, 8GB of ram. I bought the laptop a week ago and I'm a little worried about the battery life.

Running only Chrome with display a few marks past 50%, BT on and on WiFi of course, the estimated time with 50% of battery available is 3 hours or less, with 30% is only 1:50 or 2 hours.

I know how this works, I understand thats an estimate and it's really variable depending on CPU usage, display dimm, etc. I did check the battery health and even the details using cococabattery, everything seems ok, but still sound like low estimates for me and I don't think is software related, as soon I got the MBP I made a fresh install of 10.11 so I don't have anything, my CPU is below 10% usage when I got these low estimates.

I own a 2014 macbook air that has way better estimates and I was expecting to see something very similar to that on my new MBP, maybe I was expecting to much?

What do you think guys? What are your estimates for lets say 50% charge?

PS: I created a new thread because all I could found was from over 2 years ago.

Thank you!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X El Capitan (10.11), null

Sadly there's not a direct answer, depends on what your MBP is consuming besides if you run Chrome to see videos, or just web browsing, extensions, etc.

I suggest you check with Activity Monitor (located in Apps » Utilities) and see if theres something unusual, regarding CPU, Memory, Energy (app Nap) and Network.

After that if you don't see anything abnormal you can run some diagnostics About Mac notebook batteries - Apple Support

Start with a basic, SMC reset:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Perform this exercise:  Prior to a long session (1 hr.+), note the time and the charge percentage.  At the end of the session note the charge percentage and the time.  Then do the math.  That should give you 'real world usage' of battery run time.

    Ciao.

Jarnedo, here's a thought that may or may not be helpful. After a fresh reboot, you could run the same apps and access the same web sites on both your MBP and your MacBook Air to see how they both compare. You could also open Activity Monitor to see how performance compares on both Macs running side by side.

    Hi guys!

Thanks for all your answers and sorry I took so long to respond.

I found that using Chrome or Firefox will bring down the battery estimates and maybe the battery duration too. I've been checking the activity monitor for a few days and there is always a huge difference in the energy impact column between Firefox or Chrome and Safari, I'm talking about 5.500.00 for Firefox vs 0.0036.00 for Safari.

I'm not sure how that column works or how the numbers are calculated, but for sure on my system, using Safari gives me way better estimates on the battery duration.
