The problem isn't just anti virus software. Your Mac is running an outdated OS X v10.6.8 which Apple has not provided security update for in several years.
For security, you may be able to upgrade from 10.6.8 to El Capitan v10.11 if your MacBook is a (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or newer)
El Capitan is available for free at the App Store. With El Capitan installed you'll have OS X: About Gatekeeper for prevention of malware.
If you decide to upgrade, make sure to backup all your important data beforehand.
