Q: Airplay Mirroring Stuttering

After installing El Capitan Airplay mirroring to my TV via Apple TV results in stuttering mouse and video motion.  Audio OK.  Is there a way to get back to the old Airplay that was with Yosemite?  It worked fine then.

OK, I've found at least a temporary solution.  In reviewing another thread regarding the same problem, the following was posted:

Found a solution that worked for me. I have a late 2012 rMBP running airplay on an ATV3. After upgrading to El Capitan airplay video became laggy and my fans would run hard.  I open activity monitor to see that two processes were taking up 200% of CPU.   The main culprit was XPEncoder (app 150%) and Airplay XPC helper (app 50%). If I close both of these processes one right after the other, airplay turns off. If I then restart it, everything is fixed. When you restart your computer the problem returns and you have to repeat the procedure, so it isn't a longterm fix, but at least I can watch videos on my projector again until apple sorts this out.

I tried this, and it worked.  I found that by stopping the AirPlayXPCHelper function, it killed the other one (VTEncoderXPCService) also and then after restarting AirPlay, it functioned as it should - no lag or stuttering.

    Same for me.

    iMac late 2013 --> ATV 4

     

    With "native" Airplay --> nearly everything is stuttering. Mouse movements, Window movements, Videos ... so bad!

     

    With the App "Beamer" --> Videos playing fine. No stuttering.

     

    IMHO - it must be a El Capitan Problem. I got no Problems with the native Airplay via an iPhone 6 or an iPad Air 2. Only OSX *****.

     

    I also tried a wired connection to the ATV4 - straight trough a HP ProCurve GBit Switch - still the same stuttering.

     

    Come on Apple!

    found one but a pretty ******, too ... :-(

    complete fresh install WITHOUT "automated" recovery with TimeMachine.

    Everything i recovered (Files) was copied manually from my TC to the Mac to keep it clear, that no old waste will "kill" the airplay again.

    I also installed all programs manually except "BEAMER" ... i don't have any problems now.

     

    Everything works fine, no stuttering, no lagging.

     

    I don't tried to install BEAMER to verify if it`s really the problem - happy that my problems are gone.

     

    But as i remember, there was a similar problem with "AIRPARROT" in the past...

     

    Before the fresh install i got a service running at 150% (and above) CPU Load after activating AirPlay - service called "VTDecoderXPCblablabla" - that seems for me like a reference point .. so i decided to clean install without BEAMER. And now .. the VTDEcoder has a max of 5-10% CPU Load.

     

    Maybe someone feels boring and will verify my way ... :-)

    Your experience suggests that something in your old installation was causing the problem, rather than a specific bug in the OS.

    It could well be there was a race for the same resources between beamer and native airplay.

     

    FWIW, while I don't have an Apple TV, I have successfully used Airplay to display video from my iPhone on an imac screen (with AirServer software to make it an AirPlay target), and just for testing, the same works fine from my rMBP to the same iMac.

    Because there is nothing to correct. Airplay works fine for most users.

    As other users in this thread, you probably have a software conflict. You can easily check that if you make a clean install on a separate disk or partition, don't reimport your old stuff, and Airplay will work fine. You can run Etrecheck, post its report here and this may suggest which software is causing a problem.

    Wow!!!

    That is probably the longest Etrecheck report I have seen.

    You are doing yourself no favors by having tons of Login Items, Lauch Agents, etc.; and do you really need all those drives connected at the same time?

     

    It is little wonder that your reasonably fast machine is performing "below average", even though it has a fusion drive with plenty of space and 16GB of RAM.

     

    One thing stands out: you have AirParrot, which is trying to do the same thing that AirPlay does. There have been reports that this causes a conflict, so uninstalling AirParrot and trying again would be one of the first things to do.

    But you really should take the time to see which among those 20 login items you really need or want; and all the other stuff.

    Keeping all those drives connected all the time may not be the best option, too. Everytime you use the Finder or open or save a document they will all spin up and down...

    I really have no problem with the speed of my machine.  My problem is that AirPlay doesn't work.  As stated in the thread above the problem started with the installation of El Capitan and the new AirPlay software.  Everything worked just fine before.  I didn't start using AirParrot until later.  It does interfere with the video portion of AirPlay, so with each El Capitan update I uninstall AirParrot and try again.  No change.  Everything is exactly the same as it was  with Yosemite, logins and all, when Airplay worked as it should.  AirParrot is currently the only way I can mirror my desktop to my AppleTV and TV.  So, is there anything else you see that could be interfering with AirPlay?

    As you have so much stuff installed on your machine, it is hard to figure out what exactly is causing it.

    I can only suggest you install a clean version on a partition on one of those many drives you have, and try Airplay on a clean install. I am sure it will work fine.

    Then the process of elimination may begin in earnest. If, as I am confident it is the case, your problem is not an OS bug but a conflict with some software you have installed, no subsequent OS update will help.

    OK, I've found at least a temporary solution.  In reviewing another thread regarding the same problem, the following was posted:

    Found a solution that worked for me. I have a late 2012 rMBP running airplay on an ATV3. After upgrading to El Capitan airplay video became laggy and my fans would run hard.  I open activity monitor to see that two processes were taking up 200% of CPU.   The main culprit was XPEncoder (app 150%) and Airplay XPC helper (app 50%). If I close both of these processes one right after the other, airplay turns off. If I then restart it, everything is fixed. When you restart your computer the problem returns and you have to repeat the procedure, so it isn't a longterm fix, but at least I can watch videos on my projector again until apple sorts this out.


    Hope this helps some people.

    I tried this, and it worked.  I found that by stopping the AirPlayXPCHelper function, it killed the other one (VTEncoderXPCService) also and then after restarting AirPlay, it functioned as it should - no lag or stuttering.

    glassetcher1 is absolutely correct in the problematic CPU usage of those two apps being the problem. I used the fix and deleted those apps and restarted airplay and for the first time i was able to get airplay to work on my 2015 imac with the 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5 processor....this is supposed to be one of the best processors at this time (in 2016) and it still cannot support the drainage of cpu by the XPEncoder app and the Airplay XPC helper app.....

     

    With this very temporary fix i can finally enjoy airplay to my apple tv 4th gen....Wake up Apple!! You have a problem here
