Error -54

Hi All,

On Mac OSX 10.11 El Capitan

On iTunes 12.3.0.44

On iOS 9.0.2

On iPhone 6 Plus 128GB

After updating to iOS9 the syncing with itunes and iphone basically ***** real bad.

Nothing works correctly.

Apps dont transfer anymore (allegedly this is on purpose by apple god knows why)

Now the phone does not want to back up period.

I keep getting this error and its nowhere to be found on the Apple website.

Please Help!

"App Thinning": In order to make apps smaller with iOS9 they are being customized for the specific hardware on which they are to be used. For example the variant of an app downloaded for a retina iPad may not be suitable for a non-retina iPhone. You transferring from one device to a computer to a different device may result in the wrong version being used and Apple has disabled transfer from device to computer in order to prevent this happening. If you want a backup copy on your computer you can transfer a non-thinned version directly from the Store to the computer which should you need it can be transferred to any i-device (but will take up more room).

https://developer.apple.com/library/watchos/documentation/IDEs/Conceptual/AppDis tributionGuide/AppThinning/AppThinning.html - iOS9 App Thinning > "Slicing is the process of creating and delivering variants of the app bundle for different target devices. A variant contains only the executable architecture and resources that are needed for the target device." ... "The App Store will create and deliver different variants based on the devices your app supports."

From an OS9 reference, error -54 is a software lock on a file or a permissions error. (Although there is no formal list of OSX error code some of the old codes still apply to OSX .)

First, try simply restarting your computer.

Try quitting iTunes, then deleting the .xml (not .itl !) version of the library file in the iTunes folder (iTunes will generate a new one).

iTunes Library cannot be saved (Error -54) - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/1912814 - various things to try.

Error -54 possibly related to Touch Copy - https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3727114 - cleared by deleting preferences on iPad.

THANKS for the great reply Limnos. Very educational.

The only thing that bothers with this App thinning is the following.

First, why leave the buttom to transfer purchases on itunes and confuse everyone. This is just annoying.

Second, If I have my Retina items (iPad Air 2 and iPhone 6 Plus) organized my way why does apple have to make it more complicated for me to accomodate old hardware.

My setup is, I backup my phone on my work Mac at the office (Where the internet is TERRIBLE) and I backup my Ipad on my computer at home.

Always had it this way so I would not mix things up. If it meant having 2 of the same apps on different computers I did not care. One was for phone one was for ipad.

I know most people only have 1 Mac or PC to sync everything but why change a main feature to support old hardware (Non retina items are mostly old and unsupported)

Apple should just have itunes deactivate the feature automatically in the background when iTunes detects a non retina hardware item connected to it.

Why would this be so complicated?

So now I have the problem that the itunes on my work MAC says I have 145 updates needed for my apps wich I cant, and wont, download because of how terrible the internet is at my office. So I can still back up my phone but if I decide to upgrade to a new phone or just plain loose mine I can recover my backup but have to download or update all my apps all over again that were already downloaded, and updated, on my phone.

Or now I have to merge the 2 items on my home computer.

This was a TERRIBLE decision by apple.

Just my 2 cents.

"Unsupported" effectively means as if they no longer exist and as if they had never existed. They have been completely expunged from the corporation memory. Go to an Apple Store and mention you own one and they will look at you like you come from another planet. They will look for the oldest person in the store who may vaguely remember having used your "unsupported" device in grade school. 😀 I am not kidding, do not expect any consideration for using unsupported devices. (I have never owned anything except unsupported devices and you are completely outside the Apple corporate support sphere when you do so. By the way this is a user-to-user forum, not an Apple to user forum. 😉)

I know its a user to user. I was talking about it here with you or others who may read.

This is why I said it was my 0.02 cents.

Not trying to be an *** to you sir.

You only talk about my "unsopprted" word only and nothing else.

So basically you are saying its ok that they changed this huge feature that everyone is complaing about because some people might still have an iphone 3g that they want to back up. Or maybe some ipad 1s or 2s.

It it was it is and its done, but there is no way one can say this is what should have been done.

Terrible.

What is okay or isn't is not the issue here. Apple does what it does. Unless you can start a mass boycott of Apple products because they disabled this feature I suspect there isn't any other way to convince them to do differently. Oh, you can send feedback to them but dropping support after a period of time is a fact of life for modern technology ownership -- everybody does it. As I said before, if the topic involves unsupported items it is a non-starter as far as Apple support is concerned. By the way, this is a technical support forum and starting discussions about Apple's policies will get posts/topics removed.

You say, "Everyone is complaining." I am not seeing this. I have seen a couple of people mention it here on this forum, compared the probably tens of millions to whom it makes no difference. It is like going to a hospital emergency room and saying there is a mass outbreak of broken legs because you see other people there with broken legs.

Im not trying to start a Revolution here. Im just giving my opinion on a "user-to-user forum" 😉

The post was for a technical question but I added my rant after your great response to the question.. Didn't know this was a taboo.

Saying everyone is complaining is me saying ive read numerous posts about this and people asking why "the tranfers dont work"

Just taking a quick peek at the 1st page of this forum right now I see 2 other posts about the transfer situation besides this one.

You say "dropping support after a period of time is a fact of life for modern technology ownership"

This is my point exactly, why make big changes to accomodate older stuff.

But what do I know, im just 1 person.........

Thanks for all the help.
