Recently my Macbook Air has not recognized my USB to ethernet connection. I have checked the adapter as ethernet cable and all seem to be working fine. I went to System Preference > Network and removed the USB Ethernet connection and now it is not an option to add back to the list.
I am running OSX 10.11
You need a Thunderbolt-Ethernet adapter. The one you have won't work reliably, or at all, on a Thunderbolt-equipped Mac.
I've had my Macbook Air for two years and the USB Ethernet has not had any issues, this is only a recent issue which occurred on Yosemite and El Capitan.
Has the adapter ever worked in El Capitan?
Since updating my OS the problem has remained and not worked since.
Are other USB devices working?
Yes, just tested both with an iPad and iPhone. Both ports charge and sync devices.
I don't know of any way to make that adapter work. If you like, you can make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have it tested.

My USB->Ethernet dongle requires a driver. Although mine didn’t require a driver update for 10.11, last year it did require an update to work with 10.10
Have you checked the vendor's support site to see if a driver update is available?
