Q: Boot Camp disappeared after installing El Capitan

Hi, I have a lot of important files on my windows 8.1 Boot Camp partition and they were not backed up recently.  I upgraded from Yosemite to el capitan OS X 10.10 this afternoon and the screen froze on reboot and then booted into windows with an error.  After I rebooted it back into OS X it continued with the install however the Boot Camp partition is not visible from the disk utility although you can see it and select it upon pressing on the Option key during startup.  If the windows partition is selected a recovery error is shown for windows, even with the usb key inserted.

Macbook Pro mid-2014 1TB SSD  Approximately 700G OS X and 300G Windows 8.1

Here are my results from the terminal prompt tests mentioned in earlier threads.

Any help is appreciated, working on figuring out how to run test disk from the command prompt.  New to macs.

Thanks!

Ok here is what happens when I try the EFI Boot:

Windows 8 screen (4 blue squares)

    Select Language, Time and Keyboard

    Enter Product Key

    Select Windows 8.1 operating System

    Accept Microsoft Software Agreement

Asks "Where do you want to install Windows?"

    Drive 0 Partition 1 200M

    Drive 0 Partition 2 651.3M

    Drive 0 Partition 3 620M

    Drive 0 Partition 4 279.4M

    Drive 0 Unallocated 299M

Gives error message for each stating "Windows can't be installed on any of the drives"  Cannot go any further.

    No options for system repair.

This is from a 2013 rMBP with W7 - https://imgur.com/a/1DaOE#0 . Do you see an image similar to the sixth (6th) image in this album?

No, unfortunately all I see is the install windows screen.  What I am wondering is if my win 8.1 images are just the installation disk and doesn't include the windows re portion.  Or if you have to press a key at a specific time to get to that screen you are showing.  I have tried the esc key during the win 8.1 usb load up and IIRC it shuts the MBP off.

Maybe it's possible to download a windows re version that would work on windows 8.1 and repair the BCD file?  Would need to make it USB bootable.

Can you post a listing of the files on the W8.1 disk using Finder? Expand one level of directories, if possible.

I am posting snapshots of the 8.1 DVD first and then the 8.1 USB bootable

And here is the 8.1 USB installer created with Bootcamp Assistant.  Only attached screenshots for the folders which were different from the DVD.

Insert your USB created by BCA, in System Preferences, select Bootcamp (not the USB) and click Restart. The boot should be from USB, please check for Repair options.

Unfortunately I do not get an option for Bootcamp in System Preferences.  Here is what I have:

Do you have any third-party NTFS software?

Not that I am aware of.  Fairly basic Win 8.1 install.  Also turned off FileVault on the OS X but that only made the EFI partition visible during power on boot with option button pressed.  I tested it and it loads into OS X.

I am also trying another method to retrieve the files from Win 8.1 without any luck.

I downloaded a program with windows recovery on it called AOEMI PE Builder for windows 8.1.  This loads Windows RE into memory has system repair functions along with windows explorer to find files and retrieve them.  http://www.aomeitech.com/pe-builder.html

I created a bootable USB with AOEMI PE on it and booted into it by turning on, pressing the option button and selecting the windows USB.  It loads windows and gives the windows startup screen but then gives an error code: 0x000000d

If I select EFI Boot instead of Windows it just hangs with a black screen.

So I am running out of things to try.  If there was a way to access the BCD file and correct the damage from OS X upgrade, or load windows into memory.

I also tried a different method of getting Windows PE latest version for Win 8.1 (which is Windows Recovery) to start and it worked.  It started up with a command prompt for Drive X.

However I do not know how to rebuild the BCD from drive X.

Here is a Tutorial Video on how to make the USB disk with Windows PE and load it up through UEFI boot.  I am at the command prompt screen with X:\windows\system32>

Maybe this is the method to focus on?

Please see https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/927392 on how to use Bootrec.exe for rebuilding the BCD.

I wish that would work.  It requires being able to execute Bootrec.exe from the command line.

Unfortunately I get "Bootrec.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

I tried changing directories all the way down to X:\ and up to X:\Windows\System32\Boot>  but no luck.

    Run a dir/s/p bootrec.exe on X: and C: .

when running dir/s/p bootrec.exe on X: it returns

Volume in drive X is Boot

    volume serial number is D60A-0DC2

    File not found

When changing directory to C: it changes then auto changes back to X: before you can type anything into the command line

some of the .exe files available in System32 are bcdedit, bcdboot, bootcfg, chkdsk, diskpart, esentutl, find, recover
