You need to install Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier from a retail DVD or the computer’s original disks. A Snow Leopard one won’t work in a G5.

The G4 might help. It depends on what model you have and what OS is installed. It also depends on your G5. The original Power Mac G5 delivered with  OSX 10.2.7. The G4 models started with OS 8.6 in the PCI Graphics model ( Max OS 10.4.11) and ended with the Mirrored Drive Doors model (original OS 10.2 and 9.2.2. Max OS 10.5.8). It is possible that the startup disk in your G4 might have an OS that is compatible with your G5, so you could use it to start up your G5 and go from there. Then you might be able to repair your damaged disk, but that seems like a long shot.

There are lots of 10.5 retail disks on eBay right now, starting at about $20 or less. Make sure you get a retail disk, not one intended for a specific Mac unless it is the same as yours.

If you can run a Firewire cable between the G5 and the G4, you could boot the G5 into Target Disk Mode

<Share files between two computers with target disk mode - Apple Support>

Then either copy off what you can from the G5, or using an external disk attached to the G4, clone the G5 boot disk.  You can use Disk Utility -> Restore with the G5 as the source and the external disk as the destination.

However, getting a working system on the G5 might be difficult without installation disks.

You can call Apple and order replacement original installation disks for your system if you get the serial number off of it.  It is most likely somewhere that needs a magnifying glass to read
