Q: Boot camp repaired but window crashed after creating new partition

i'm using mac air mid 2011. ( OS X El Capitan version 10.11).

I set up Boot Camp to dual-boot Windows on my MacBook Air. Everything was fine. But until recently after I made another partition. I wasn't aware that this would affect my Windows partition as I thought it was completely different.

When I boot up, there is no option to boot with Windows. But when I boot the Mac and select Startup Disk, it shows Boot Camp is still there and all my files etc are still there.

Eventuall i found a solution in apple support and fixed this problem. But the next problem existing is, i can't access to my window at all. When the boot option i choose window, it will come out with black screen and not running at all. Need help.

    1. What year/model is your Mac?

    2. You can use Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R), but it will install OSX version that shipped with your Mac, not El Capitan.

    No.

    Yes.

Rebuild MBR to match the new GPT information thus resetting the Hybrid MBR. Use defaults for other questions (like partition codes). The only values that need modifications are the Boot flags and step 10. Accept all other defaults that Gdisk offers. Please see the sample Q&A as an example. These steps can be repeated if you make a mistake before you get to Step 12, otherwise start from Step 1 for these steps. Step 6 has numbers which are typed with a space between the numbers. Please see the sample Q&A before you execute these steps.

    1. Sudo gdisk /dev/rdisk0
    2. P  (Print list of parts)
    3. R  (Recover)
    4. O (print current Hybrid MBR)
    5. H (chooses Hybrid)
    6. Partitions numbers to be hybridized: 2 3
    7. Y  (Good for GRUB question)
    8. N  (part 2 boot flag)
    9. Y  (part 3 boot flag make NTFS bootable partition)
    10. O  (print current Hybrid MBR)
    11. W (Write the new MBR)
    12. Y (Yes! write the new MBR)
    13. Reboot

Here is sample Q&A for this section. Please notice the Press Enter/Return.

Place EFI GPT (0xEE) partition first in MBR (good for GRUB)? (Y/N): Y

Creating entry for GPT partition #2 (MBR partition #2)

Enter an MBR hex code (default AF): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): N

Creating entry for GPT partition #3 (MBR partition #3)

Enter an MBR hex code (default 07): Press Enter/Return

Set the bootable flag? (Y/N): Y

Test 1 - Does Bootcamp Volume show up in Finder?

Test 2 - Can you see files in Bootcamp Volume?

Test 3 - Can you select Bootcamp in System Preferences -> Startup Disk?

Test 4 - If Test 3 is successful, select Bootcamp and Click Restart.

No, you do not need to create  a new discussion. Let us first bring back your Windows installation. If you re-install OSX later, your Windows will again stop working.

Loner T, sorry to jump into this thread, but I see you've been helping people out with Bootcamp issues. I created a separate thread here and was wondering if you could help me out please. Thanks in advance!

Firstly thank you for this post - really helpful.  Was in the same position as the OP (the 5 partition situation), corrected that and windows now boots and all works fine as does OSX.  The issue is that the 4th partition I created cant be accessed from Windows (can see it on OSX) - is there a way of doing this without damaging anything else?

Can you start a new discussion and post the output of

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0
