How do watch iTunes content on my iPad mini

HI, I have an iPad Mini with Apple remote installed. I also have an Apple TV3 which is connected via Ethernet to my network. My iPad is obviously using wireless. Both wired and wireless are on the same network and home sharing is turned on in all devices. My personal library content is stored on an external drive connected to the computer. Sharing is turned on.

WHen I start Remote on my iPad it shows an Apple TV and My Library icons but when I select is gives me an error that I cannot connect.

what am I doing wrong?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.0.2, iPad Air, Apple TV3
