It got detected in the Bluetooth preferences and works for moving the cursor, but it does not show on the Trackpad preferences and I cannot use multi touch... Any idea? We already have El Capitan installed, and all software is up to date

Which model of iMac? It will need to be Late 2012 or newer to have Bluetooth 4.

I have the very same problem. My iMac 27" is from Late 2012. And I hear from various poeple that older macs should run fine with Trackpad 2.
But. My Trackpad gets not automatically paired with the Mac over the Cable plug. I can't get to point&Click dialogs.
Please help. This problem is not solved!

As stedman1 pointed out it seems that some old iMac models don't work with the Trackpad 2. As soon as I connected it with my MacBook 15" (Late 2013), it worked like a charm (but I actually prefer the previous model, lighter and easier to move around on my desk - I am now stuck with the new one, as my wife had ordered it for her iMac, and I had to give her my "old" Trackpad....)
