Q: Sound device option for internal speakers just disappeared

I have iOS 10.6.8.  Yesterday the sound from the internal speakers disappeared, seemingly without provocation.  I used Time Machine to replace the System Preferences with one from a week ago when the speakers worked just fine. No help.   I checked the sound section of the System Preferences and the only option for device for sound output was headphones.  I am getting sound thru the headphones just fine, but that seems to be the only option.  I plugged (and unplugged) the headphones repeatedly.  No change.  I reset the PRAM a couple of times.  Now it says "headphones" as name and "Optical digital-out port" as type.  I've run out of ideas (and can't find anything useful in answers to other similar questions).  HELP!!

    Hi there Yohohanna,

It sounds like you are not seeing your internal speakers in your System Preferences. Check out this information from the following article:

Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs - Apple Support

    1. If the Internal Speakers option does not appear in the Output tab and your computer is not a Mac Pro, check that Digital Out is present as in the image below:Digital Out selected as Built-in Output

      1. Confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
      2.
      3. Check to see if a red light is lit in the line-out port. If so, your Apple computer may need service.
      4.
      5. If you do not see a red light, proceed to step 5.
    2. If the issues persist, contact Apple support for further troubleshooting assistance.
