Keychain login cannot be found

I have this pop up seemingly permanent on my iMac late 2011 model. No response when I click either of two available buttons-Cancel or Reset to Defaults.

I have tried to reset keychain password via Keychain Access but the login keychain will not open.

Also see a message to log on to iCloud but password (with which I have logged on to computer)is refused.


I have also had been experiencing the spinning wheel which on my home screen-partially cured by shutting down, unplugging then restarting.

Restarting took quite a while between startup sound when screen changed from black to several minutes of white before actual log on screen. The spinning wheel then had gone away but since does reappear frequently.

Thanks for your reply. I have followed the three options without success.

Unfortunately I am not an expert and just like things to work as they were intended.

I can log on, as now, with my Apple ID but still receive intermittent messages that there is a problem with my email address, (which is continuing to receive messages normally). Various keychains cannot be found.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately I cannot get past first line of Kappy suggestions-there is my user name but no box for password. Stumped.

I have posted a number of questions on various communities without success.

Keychain mysteries, Apple ID problems. Spinning wheel problems.

Possibly all are related but I am now faced with email not working. I get message " Inbox read only (connection logging enabled)" and a box opens inviting me to select from a number of providers. I select iCloud which I had been using but when I enter email address and password they are not accepted.

Frustrating that i can log into mail on a windows PC and add iCloud account problem using my normal email and Apple ID password. I can send/ receive mail via the PC.

Do you think I need a factory reset to get back to a clean iMac?

My local Apple store is 45 miles each way.
