Q: Text Tone goes silent after a time - on one contact only

Before I begin - Mute switch is set to ring, volume is up, DND is not on, and is also not on for the text conversation with this person.

Now that I've cleared that up...

My text tone for one specific contact goes silent after a while. When I initially choose a tone for this contact, everything works normally. As I am previewing the tones, I can hear each and every one. When she texts me, the phone vibrates and makes sound as it should.

After a while (days, weeks, although sometimes hours) the phone will stop making noise when she texts me. It still vibrates properly, just no sound. What really confuses me is that the specific tone that I had set (Illuminate in this case) does not make any sound when previewing all the tones (in choose text tone menu). All other tones operate as expected, except the one that was set for her contact.

After changing tones (chimes for example), the new tone works well for a while, then the same thing eventually happens to that tone. When I then open the "choose text tone" menu, both 'Illuminate' and 'Chimes' now make no noise. This process will continue to repeat, silencing my tones one by one.

Upon a hard reset, all tones make noise again. This problem reoccurs every few weeks.

The only unique thing about this contact is that we text back and forth all day, every day. I don't know why this would have any effect, but it is the only thing that comes to mind as to why it would happen with her and nobody else.

Also, this only happens to the text tone. The ringtone for phone calls has yet to cause any problems.

Please help!! This is driving me crazy!!

    Hello there, Grivvvy.

It sounds like you've done some very thorough troubleshooting, so far. Although the steps are for no sound, there may be some steps that you haven't tried listed:

If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support

Follow these steps and test the sound after each one.

    1. Go to Settings > Sounds and drag the Ringer And Alerts slider to turn the volume up.
    2. If you can hear sound from the speaker, then the speaker works. Continue with these steps to find the setting or switch that's affecting the sound. If you can't hear sound from the speaker, contact Apple Support.
    3. If your device has a Ring/Silent switch, make sure it's set to ring. If you can see orange, it's set to silent.
    4. Restart your device.
    5. Open an app that has music or sound effects. Adjust the volume with the volume buttons or the slider in Control Center.
    6. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth.
    7. If there's still no sound, connect a headset. If you can hear sound through the headset, remove it and clear any dust or debris from the headset jack of your device.
    8. If the device is in a case, make sure that the case doesn't block the speaker.
    9. Use a brush to gently clear any debris from the speaker and Lightning connector (or 30-pin dock connector). The brush should be clean and dry and have soft bristles.
    10. Update your device to the latest version of iOS.

If you follow these steps and still hear no sound or distorted sound, contact us.

Keep in mind, we released iOS version 9.1 today, therefore step 10 is definitely one you'll want to make sure to follow.

Thanks for being a part of Apple Support Communities.

    Cheers.

I know this isn't an answer, but I just wanted to post that I have the same problem, and it is very irritating.
