Canoscan 8800F casualty of ElCapitan

A perfectly good scanner will not work with 10.11 because Canon is to lazy to develop a driver for it. I had worked with 10.10 and so I went back in time machine and found my old driver from 10.10 and added it to the Printer Library folder but didn't work. The reply to my email to Canon was that it was to old to develop a driver. What else might I use to get this thing to work? I don't use it a lot but I hate to get rid of a good machine. Ideas?

MASSIVE thanks to lorenzo303's answer for keeping my old Canoscan 8800f alive. I'm successfully scanning on macOS 10.12 Sierra using the instructions.

Couple of notes for those who come later:

At time of writing you can still find the version of MP Navigator EX 1.0.8 mentioned on canon-asia.com's site at http://support-ph.canon-asia.com/contents/PH/EN/0200328832.html

(better than risking some malware from some dodgy download site). Seemed to be otherwise quite hard to find.

I spent a bit of time puzzling where this "Use the scanner driver" checkbox was. But it's not in "preferences"; it's in the dialog which appears once you actually initiate scanning. The first time you use it you'll need to pick a destination app for completed scans to be sent to. Either of "Photos" or "Preview" seems to work fine.

I downloaded the new driver for OS El Capitan 10.11 & still no performance.

One of you suggested looking in the Library, so I followed this chain:

Library > Image Capture > Epson Scanner > Open with Terminal.........Image Capture then opened and scans well.

There was also a prompt that stated "Image Capture will not work if you close Terminal" so we shall see.

GREAT NEWS FOR 8800F OWNERS WHO INSTALLED EL CAPITAN!

I spent hours on this problem, and think I have found an excellent solution. First off, the 8800F is an awesome scanner. And I didn't want to trade it in for a lesser model because of El Capitan. After I installed El Capitan and tried to use my scanner it didn't work with image capture , PS, etc. So I thought it was fried. And when I called Apple, they said it was Canon's responsibility to provide an updated driver. When I called Canon they said they would not be updating and I should consider buying a newer version scanner, etc. NOT ACCEPTABLE. SORRY! Then I remember MP Navigator EX 1.0.8, which I never used because I thought it lacked capabilities compared to scanning and importing with PS. But then I started experimenting with the MP Navigator and discovered two things: one, there was a box that you could check off in MP Navigator EX. This box says" Use the scanner driver. This is key. You must check this box. The other is to make sure you click on OPEN SCANNER DRIVER. If you do both of these things you will get a screen that give you complete scanner control. You will be able to preview, crop the area to scan, and use one of the three modes offered: Simple. Advanced, or Multi-Scan. Good luck. Hope this helps all and eliminates the need to buy something not as good as what you already have on your desk.

This piece of software is specific to this group of Canon Scanners. I should have thought of it before I posted. I was depending on seeing the scanner in the Printer Pane of the System software. It still doesn't show there but Navigator finds the scanner. Epson might make a similar software. I don't know. I would think VueScan will work for you as Old Toad recommended above. It seems to be a good piece of Software. You can download it and try it before you buy it. He has a link in his post above.

Thank you for posting this, Lorenzo! I found this thread a week ago, before you'd posted. I was about to purchase VueScan, but after reading multiple reviews about the terrible customer service, I thought I'd check this thread one more time for updates. I had what I thought I was the latest version of MP Navigator EX, but it wouldn't open. For some strange reason, version 1.0.8 is newer than 5.0.x. Anyway, your solution worked. I understand that manufacturers at some point have to stop supporting legacy hardware and software, but the 8800F was one of their mid-range scanners (I bought it to replace a cheap CanoScan LiDE 30 that Canon had stopped supporting), it's still great, and there haven't been major advances in scanner technology that I'm aware of. Is writing hardware drivers that difficult?
