Q: El Capitan: Kernel: hfs_clonefile: cluster_read failed - 34

I got loads and loads of these errors after upgrading to El Capitan. Sometimes as much as thousands per 10 minutes. Sometimes so bad, that IO was heavily impacted when logging these errors.

After booting it is normally OK, but it starts at some point and gets worse and worse with multiple occurrences per second.

Googling found 0 (!). There are a lot of topics with "cluster_read failed - 5", but these are real Disk I/O errors and always also show an accompanying Disk I/O error. I do *not* get Disk I/O errors.

I put the drive through DriveGenius 4 and all OK.

I'm trying to find out why this happens and it looks like this is El Capitan specific. If I do a fresh install of El Capitan on a freshly formatted drive, It takes about 10 minutes for this error to kick in. The same procedure with Yosemite does NOT produce this error.

Things that I think might be related:

- Running El Capitan instead of Yosemite

- iMac (27-inch, Late 2012)

- Thunderbolt connected drives

- Perhaps related to sleep mode (although this does not happen under Yosemite!!!)

- Perhaps related to FileVault (I pre-format my drive encrypted before installing).

- Perhaps related to LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 2 drives

Things that are not related:

- Software installed (I did fresh installs of Yosemite and El Capitan to compare)

- Hard drive sector errors

Anyone seen this as well?

    I just got an update from the App Store that there is an update for El Capitan (10.11.1).

    After applying (quite a large update, which also seems to update firmware) it *looks* like the error is gone!

    I'm now re-downloading the install El Capitan app from the App Store, will extract the installation to a drive and re-install from scratch onto my LaCie.

    Will report the results.

    Really appreciate you looking into this Linc.

    Initially things looked very good with 10.11.1, but eventually the error came back.

    Hey Arjen,

    Did you ever make any headway with this?  I'm having similar issues with this error, with kernel panics restarting my system randomly.

    I am on a 27" iMac (mid-2011) and am booting off of a WD Thunderbolt Duo drive.

    For anyone following or stumbling upon this thread because of an unfortunate situation yourself, I'll share what my eventual solution was.

    After lots of troubleshooting and trying determine what piece of hardware/software was the root of this error, I determined it to be a problem with my Thunderbolt cable.  Since I boot off of an external Thunderbolt drive, these intermittent connection problems between my iMac and its boot drive were causing kernel panics and random system restarts.

    I did not have a second Thunderbolt cable to test the original, so I tried using it in a different way and hook up an external display with it.  In this configuration the slightest movement would cause the external display to go blank, and so I was on to the problem.

    I've since purchased a new Thunderbolt cable and have been booting off the same external drive for a week with no problems.

    Hi I just thought I should add to this..

    I have been having this issue in a working environment for some time now and google doesn't report many hfs_clonefile: cluster_read failed - 34 errors mainly -5 so I was a little in the dark.  I spoke to Apple and LaCie for advice and followed their instructions but to no avail.

    I also changed the Thunderbolt cables as described in this thread. In the end the only way i managed to solve this was to roll back from 10.11.3 to 10.10.5.

    So far all seems stable in Yosemite with no hfs errors in the console, and lots of happy Afp and Smb users!

    Just thought id share if others get this error. Its a shame i had to roll back an OS but at least the Raids are behaving as they are intended.

    Thanks Rob

    I'm getting bunches of these errors on my 27" iMac which has a 3Tb internal.

    I tried to run disk firstaid and it seemed to go away for a while, but I think it was just that it got restarted.

    1 year later I'm still on Yosemite.

    Because Mac OS is coming, I thought: "Let's give El Capitan a try.".

    The issue is still not fixed.

    I have not heard anything from LaCie yet. Their support *****.

    A small light on the horizon are 2 posts I googled showing other users have this too - but apparently not massively.

    The first one here on the forums:

    https://origin-discussions-us.apple.com/thread/7568564?start=0&tstart=0

    Apparently this user does not have a LaCie disk, but is booting from an external disk as well. This user appears to have gotten rid of the issue by cleaning LaunchAgents from LaCie (again) and AVG. I have asked him if he still has LaCie drives attached.

    The other post is from somebody who asked on stack overflow how to debug these errors.

    http://stackoverflow.com/questions/38156192/find-process-where-a-particular-syst em-call-returns-a-particular-error

    It looks like he is a coder, because he said he'd look into the source code to figure out were this comes from. I have contacted him, but no answer yet.

    So the first guy has a LaCie Rugged FW USB3 Media drive attached. But only 500GB in 2 partitions.

    The 2nd guy studied the source code and used dtrace and came to the conclusion this happens in this code of hfs_vnops.c:

    /*

    * Open a file/directory.

    */

    static int

    hfs_vnop_open(struct vnop_open_args *ap)

    {

    struct vnode *vp = ap->a_vp;

    struct filefork *fp;

    struct timeval tv;

    int error;

    /*

    * Files marked append-only must be opened for appending.

    */

    if ((VTOC(vp)->c_flags & APPEND) && !vnode_isdir(vp) &&

    (ap->a_mode & (FWRITE | O_APPEND)) == FWRITE)

    return (EPERM);

    if (vnode_isreg(vp) && !UBCINFOEXISTS(vp))

    return (EBUSY); /* file is in use by the kernel */

    /* Don't allow journal file to be opened externally. */

    if (VTOC(vp)->c_fileid == VTOHFS(vp)->hfs_jnlfileid)

    return (EPERM);

    /*

    * On the first (non-busy) open of a fragmented

    * file attempt to de-frag it (if its less than 20MB).

    */

    if ((VTOHFS(vp)->hfs_flags & HFS_READ_ONLY) ||

    (VTOHFS(vp)->jnl == NULL) ||

    !vnode_isreg(vp) || vnode_isinuse(vp, 0)) {

    return (0);

    }

    if ((error = hfs_lock(VTOC(vp), HFS_EXCLUSIVE_LOCK)))

    return (error);

    fp = VTOF(vp);

    if (fp->ff_blocks &&

    fp->ff_extents[7].blockCount != 0 &&

    fp->ff_size <= (20 * 1024 * 1024)) {

    /*

    * Wait until system bootup is done (3 min).

    */

    microuptime(&tv);

    if (tv.tv_sec > (60 * 3)) {

    (void) hfs_relocate(vp, VTOVCB(vp)->nextAllocation + 4096,

    vfs_context_ucred(ap->a_context),

    vfs_context_proc(ap->a_context));

    }

    }

    hfs_unlock(VTOC(vp));

    return (0);

    }

    Basically he concludes that this happens when OSX wants to open a file, finds out that it is less than 20MB and not busy and is defragmented. Hence OSX tries to clone the file to defragment it and then open it.

    Apparently something goes wrong and the cluster_read failed is issued.

    Does this ring a bell with anyone?

    Summary of where things are:

    Things that I think might be related:

    - Running El Capitan (issue happen) instead of Yosemite (no problems)

    - iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) - another user reported this on a MacPro 2010.

    - Thunderbolt connected drives - another user reported this on a 4 disks setup in a RAID 5 array using the SoftRaid software.

    - Perhaps related to sleep mode (after coming back from sleep, the errors are more frequent in console)

    - One user did some research and believes this happens in on-the-fly defragmentation when opening defragmented files <20MB for the first time. OSX wants to clone the file to defragment it.

    Things that are not related:

    - Software installed (I did fresh installs of Yosemite and El Capitan to compare)

    - Hard drive sector errors (drives were checked with DriveGenius)

    - Not related to FileVault - also happens when the drive is normally formatted.

    - Not related to LaCie 2big Thunderbolt 2 drives - other users do not report LaCie or connect through USB3 or FW.

    I also noticed this:

    Activity shows 5 MB/s is being written when Console logs these errors.

    When I open a 2nd Console window, 10 MB/s is being written to the disk.

    This continues. Every new Console window adds 5 MB/s.

    If I close Console, disk IO drops to almost 0 MB/s.

    I had this error with a Mac mini and Areca 5026 Thunderbolt RAID. Do you have "Ignore ownership on this volume" checked or unchecked? I have it unchecked but noticed that the owner and group on the external volume are not correct, but they are listed as "_unknown", which only makes sense if "Ignore ownership on this volume" is checked. So I changed the owner and group.

    See if you have the same by running:

    ls -la /Volumes/[drive]

    and

    ls -la /Volumes/[drive]/

    Change the owner and group of the volume itself to your username and admin group. At the root of the volume, change ".Spotlight-V100", ".Trashes" and ".fsevents" and other system folders to correct owner and group:

    sudo chown -R root:wheel /Volumes/[drive]/.Spotlight-V100 /Volumes/[drive]/.Trashes /Volumes/[drive]/.fseventsd /Volumes/[drive]/.DocumentRevisions-V100

    You might have other hidden folders too like .TemporaryItems. You can also change visible folders as well.

    After correcting the permissions last night I've had only one error in the log when before I had multiple in one hour. If you use the drives with "Ignore ownership on this volume" enabled, then the permissions shouldn't matter but there might be a bug in the OS.

    Interesting. I had .Spotlight-V100 and .fseventsd set to my user. Changed this and observing.

    Issues are still happening. I believe more that there is a sporadic issue with on the fly defragmenting of files <20MB...

    Once OSX has that fixed, those errors do not occur anymore for those files.
