Oct 20, 2015 6:23 PM in response to Drew M.by Grant Bennet-Alder,I am running the latest OS X on my macbook pro retina.
No, you are not running anything. You need to re-install.
I need to back some files up onto a usb flash drive first.
without a working Mac OS X, you will have great difficulty doing that. It is possible using Terminal commands, but you would have to manually mount the drives first, and copy the files manually as well.
You would need an alternate Boot Drive to boot that Mac. If you have another Mac with comparable Hardware, you could use Target Disk Mode to access your MacBook Drive (that function is all in ROM, no working Mac OS X is needed.)

Oct 20, 2015 7:48 PM in response to Drew M.by Grant Bennet-Alder,When you use Target disk mode, it turns the "stupid" Mac into a glorified hard drive and that drive is mounted as an external drive on the "smart" Mac. Drag and drop whatever you need in either direction.
You can even do a Disk Utility (Repair Disk) if you like.
You can even run the Installer from the "smart" Mac and Install onto the "stupid" Mac's drive.
