Why isn't there an LED notification for missed alerts?

I'm returning to Apple, having been away since the release of iPhone 2nd Gen. What happened to the LED notifications for missed alerts? I don't know what I've missed unless I turn the screen on? Is there an app that puts a light back on to tell me when I missed something?
