Q: Extending wifi speed

Hello,

I have a cable modem connected via ethernet to a Time Capsule in my basement.  The TC WiFi signal upstairs in my house is very poor.  I have an older Airport Extreme that I've set up to extend the wifi upstairs.  Here are the speeds I'm getting.

Basement & main floor - 145 mbps download - I assume this is the speed from the Time Capsule

Second floor - 10 mbps download - I assume this is the speed coming from the Extreme

I notice that some clients are accessing the basement TC - which I don't want because the clients are far away from it.  I'd prefer if the upstairs clients used the Extreme.

Any ideas on how to increase the upstairs speed?

Thx. Robb

Please power off the AirPort Extreme for now, run your speed checks again using only the Time Capsule and then report on your results.

Check speed a few times in each location to arrive at an average in the basement, on the main floor and then upstairs.

Next question....is there any way that you could consider installing an Ethernet cable to run from the basement Time Capsule to a location on the main floor?

    Hi Bob,

I will disconnect and then report on the speeds.

Ethernet isn't really an option - unless I go the route of a power line adapter I guess.

It would also help us if you could let us know what models of Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme that you have. If you do NOT have a "tower" shaped Time Capsule or AirPort Extreme, please look on the bottom of each device to locate the model number.  It starts with an "A" followed by four numbers.

The model number might be embedded in the foam pad base, so it is not always easy to see.

Unfortunately, trying to extend a network using wireless.....even if you have line of sight between the AirPorts.....will result in at least a 50% drop in speeds on the entire network, so we are looking at some significant challenges if the signal must pass through ceilings and walls.
