Mount or Un-mount USB External Devices ?

When upgrading to OS X El Capitan, I have 2 external HDD (USB Ports) partitioned for "Time Machine" & "Photography" and other stuff, should these devices, including card readers, printers, etc, etc,... be all disconnected / un-mounted before proceeding with Installation to OS X El Capitan ?
