How do I open images from a CD, that are .img files?

Just what is supposed to be on the file/disk? .img can be "image" files or disk images.

When I have received such X-ray CDs, the CD included a reader program. However, the ones I had only had a program for a PC, not a Mac. However, the CD did include .jpg files that could be opened on a Mac as well as PC. The reader app allow manipulation of the ,img files like contract and zoom.
How do I open an .img file?
