Q: iTunes won't open after updating to 12.3.1

Hi I have OSX 10.11.1 running and I updated my iTunes to 12.3.1. Now all I get is the spinning beach ball when i try to start iTunes. I did a force quit and rebooted but the same thing is happening. I have a huge music library so I thought maybe it was doing some kind of update by after a half hour iTunes is still got the spinning beach ball. Any help would be appreciated.

I had the same problem. I resolved it by zapping iTunes 12.3.1 with appzapper, then I proceeded to download iTunes 12.3 and installed that version. Once you do that make sure you uncheck automatic updates of iTunes. Now my iTunes opens and plays with the same sluggishness of 12.3 but it plays my music and after 10 seconds of beachballs to the next song keeps working. Amazing how Apple has screwed up iTunes and won't even acknowledge there is an issue with the app. After you do this then complain to Apple via iTunes or the Apple support page not here they do not read these pages. Also do not call for support they have no answers and will lie about how great the update version is.

Russell, I've been following these discussions - as someone who hasn't upgraded to the latest itunes or ElCapitan, I am trying to keep my older versions until Apple can work up a patch.

Unfortunately, I find, after updating my iPad to ios9 that I can't sync because I'm keeping an old itunes.

Message says: "ipad cannot be used because it requires 12.2.2 or later. Would you like to download now?"

Obviously, that means Apple wants me to download the bugfilled 12.3.1

Is there anyplace you know I can get 12.2.2?

I reverted to 12.3.0.44 and haven't had any real issues since removing 12.3.1. I did upgrade to El Capitan. I don't know about getting 12.2.2, but I should think you could download 12.3.0.44 from one of the non-Apple sites mentioned in these threads and do okay. I think I'd make a copy of your current iTunes, though, and keep it somewhere safe in case, for some reason, you have trouble w/ 12.3.0.44. But the latter seems to have worked for quite a few of us who had trouble w/ 12.3.1.23. I'll paste here what I've listed elsewhere:

This is from other people. Worked for me, anyway.

    Download 12.3:

    http://www.v3.co.uk/v3-uk/download-review/1957301/apple-itunes-for-mac-1110

    Then:

    1. Open the Terminal
    2. Run "sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app"
    3. Re-install iTunes

Also, be aware that when it asks for your password, the password won't be visible as you type it. After you type password, hit enter and iTunes should be deleted.

After I reinstalled 12.3.0.44, things worked as before. Note: I had to restart to my iMac before the version number in Finder matched the actual version number found by looking at "About iTunes" in the menu. Also, I then ran repair disk permissions via OnyX. It showed some problems w/ iTunes permissions, but those may or may not have been relevant to any of this problem.

Good luck and hope this helps.

For now going back to version 12.3 helps. Thanks! iTunes is as fast as before the update to 12.3.1. A short spinning ball every now and then. It's definitely not where it should be as iTunes already started to perform less since version 10.something. But for now better as in "Now it works compared to s*cks big time". Thank you Apple for continuously screwing up. Guess it's all about the benjamins for you, while leaving your hardcore followers out there in the cold by only thinking in front-end solutions rather then back-end solutions.

I'm having this problem also. I don't know how to use the Terminal to change the downloaded iTunes.

How do you put the line in

    "sudo rm -r /Applications/iTunes.app"

with the " " or delete them,

do I need to type RUN in front of that string

Please advise, iTunes does not work and I need it to

    George

I've downloaded App cleaner, but cannot get iTunes to delete?

what do I have to do to delete it?

I've unlocked iTunes in Get Info, but when I drop the iTunes app onto Appcleaner, it's locked again, and I can't check the box on the left

    Please advise

would like to get iTunes running again

    Thanks

George download appzapper and then delete itunes. Download itunes 12.3 and install, then you have to disable itunes update both from the app and the app store. Good Luck, it worked for me.

You do not need to add Run and you shouldn't add the quotes.

You will need to put in your computer's password.

Also note that after you've installed the older version of iTunes, you should go into your system preferences and choose App Store, then take the check off of Install App Updates and Automatically download apps purchased on other Macs.

    Thanks!

I couldn't get appcleaner to work, but found appzapper.

Did as you suggested above, downloaded 12.3.0.44 version

    installed

and now I'm back in business,

actually, somewhat less "spinning ball" events than before the update to 12.3.1

    Thanks again

    George

Glad it worked but make sure you disable 12.3.1 update in the app store and then disable updates in itunes.

Hlacing the same exact problem here.  20 minutes to start.  5 minutes in between it being responsive between clicks.  I have a library of around 25k

All you have to do is download appzapper, then download itunes 12.3. After you download both use appzapper to zap itunes then reinstall 12.3. Once you are up and running disable itunes updates in the app store and in itunes. after ou do that complain to Apple they do not read these pages.

is appzapper going to delete all my music files though?  Also I'm assuming I'll lose my library information.  I guess it's a necessary evil if I can actually use iTunes again.  I just don't want to lose thousands of BPM metadata for my tracks

If you feel uncomfortable you can move your itunes library to a portable hard drive and then follow the instructions I have given. For me I didn't lose anything and my library works fine, I have heard of people losing their libraries due to itunes screwing up but not because of appzapper.
