Q: Itunes not responding, running extremely slow

I've done all the normal troubleshooting already... disabled everything possible in all the setting options to optimize performance...I do not have any smart playlists etc, do not have any devices synced, all updates are current on the laptop

When I play a song, it starts immediately, then I get the spinning wheel for 2-3 minutes...same thing when dragging a track into a playlist, editing a track name, creating a playlist, editing start/stop time etc...it's impossible to use the program, and the lag time between commands is ridiculous.

I have a:

MacBook Pro (17-inch, Early 2011)

2.2 GHz Intel Core i7

16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3

OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

Running iTunes 12.3.1

Any way to solve these issues/speed up the program?

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Does anyone know how you can follow a discussion without adding a reply?

I added this comment so I can follow additional replies on this thread. Seems like there should be another way to do this!

Yeah, look in the upper right of the window. There should be a tick mark there. Click it and it should say "Following." That tick seems to be on every page. And you don't have to write a message.

    EastDog-

Have you tried the 12.3.2 update? The "what's new" section makes no mention of fixing problems we  all having, but that would require admitting there was a problem. I'm going to try it now and see if it breaks things like 12.3.1 did...

Yeah. This seems to have fixed, for me, for now, so far, what was broken in this software, even as it hold out zero promise that Apple is inclined to fix what is equally broken in their software development process, or their concern for the customers that they think they have locked in.

Well, I suppose I'm lucky in that I don't really have any playlists to speak of. I tend to put music on my phone either as artists or specific albums and it's not uncommon for me to change that every couple of weeks. BUT, I fully understand and appreciate that many people on here have extensive playlists and don't want to create a new library and risk losing them.  The one good thing that came from all of this from my own personal point of view is highlighting the hardware and firmware problems with my NAS and they have now been fixed.  Also gave me the chance to upgrade the hard drives to something more reliable than the Seagate drives it came with ;-)

From the sounds of things, the latest build of iTunes seems to have fixed the problems we've all been having so I'll update tomorrow and see how that goes.

Yes for instance my top rated playlist is songs I've marked over 10 years as favorites, to lose that would be catastrophic.

Latest upgrade seems to work. Wow. Lot of time wasted on work-arounds. Now since I have all the time in the world, guess I better fix the icloud problem.

Last release solves the problem. iTunes 12.3.2.35. Finally Apple... Smooth as always!

12.3.2.35 fixed my extremely-slow-to-the-point-of-unusability problems. No more beach balls, very responsive. It now performs even better than 12.3.0.44, which had its moments of spinning sluggishness.

What a frustrating ordeal that was, though. I wish Apple could have at least admitted that there's a problem, even if they were to qualify it as a problem that only happens "for some users."

12.3.2.35 is sadly not working for me. I hadn't emptied the trash on my NAS so I was able to put all my media files back where they belong but I'm trying to update all the Apps in my library and the downloads are still painfully slow. Currently saying 38 minutes for a 64MB file. Last night, a 156MB file took one minute when I pointed iTunes at the backup library on my Mac. I appear to have no lag in iTunes itself but the downloads are just a pain in the *** once again.

What is the issue with iTunes and Network drives? Why can't Apple get this working properly?

Well, now it's back to it's old trick of copying a playlist from the phone BACK to the computer if I've altered the playlist on the computer.  So I end up with TWO copies of the same playlist on both the phone AND the computer and all I've done is change the running order!  Mad!  Absolutely mad!  And so am I.  I really had hopes that with all the positive comments about the latest build, all the problems would have gone away but that doesn't seem to be the case.  Gah!

From now on Swinsian will be my back up with Airfoil. Swinsian doesn't have all the bells and whistles but it does work. And it will work with the itunes library and playlists.

After installing 12.3.2.35, it worked for about a minute then back to the same, slow with a spinning beach ball
