Q: Did Security Update 2015-007 break printing in Microsoft Word 2011?

I installed Security Update 2015-07 from the Mac Ap store this morning on my MBP running Mac OS 10.9.5.  After restarting, all my Word for Office 2011 documents won't print to any printer.  All the fonts have been replaced by rectangles, like a font substitution from a crypto maniac.  Even the preview in the print dialog box is affected.  If I print to PDF, the PDF still has the crypto font substitution.  The document itself is fine because if I open it on another Mac that hasn't installed the update, the document prints fine.  The document also prints from Preview if I use Preview to open the .doc file, although the formatting is messed up.

Trouble shooting I have done:  Used Disk Utility to repair disk (no problems) and repair permissions

Followed Microsoft's instructions for detailed and complete removal of all traces of Office 2011, and a complete clean reinstall of Office 2011.

Multiple .doc documents have been tried with multiple printers with multiple applications.  All other applications seem to print their docs fine on all printers except Word documents printed from Word.  All of the Word documents open and print fine on multiple other macs running 10.9.5 and 10.10 that have not run yesterday's security update yet.

I suspect something in the Security Update 2015-007 broke Office 2011's Word's ability to link fonts properly, leading to the crazy font substitution when the document is imaged by Word.

Anyone else having this issue?  If your business relies on Office 2011, Word and Mac OX 10.9, you should perhaps wait before allowing this latest Security Update install.  Is there any way to uninstall the Security Update?

Don't know what the fix is (restore from TM or a clone maybe?) but I just installed the update and I have no problem with fonts in Word 2011, and no problem to print documents.

Here's an update. At least with this configuration (10.9.5, Office 2011, MBP Mid 2012 w/8GB RAM & i7) there is a reproducible problem with the Security Update 2015-007. This prevents Word from properly imaging fonts when printing .doc documents from within Word. I worked through this with Microsoft Tech support.

After completely uninstalling Office 2011, running Disk Utility disk repair and Permissions repair, then clean reinstall of Office 2011 and Office Service Pack 3, the problem persisted. I then reinstalled Mavericks from my recovery disk, but did not add any Mac software updates. This restored printing from Word.

Next, I used Software Update to install all updates except the Security Update 2015-007. Reboot and tested fine with Word printing OK.   Then I installed the Security Update, rebooted, and rebroke Word. I reinstalled Mavericks again and can now use Word to print so long as I don't allow Software Update to install the Security Update 2015-007.

Anyone using 10.9.5 Mavericks and Office 2011 should hold off on installing Security Update 2015-007 until this issue has been fixed.

I just tested my Word and all OK so not sure why you are having the issue.

Thank you for the bug reporting link.  I'm not a developer, but I was able to send them an email with my system profile.  I suspect there is something peculiar about my configuration that causes this problem, which may not occur in other Mac OSX variations or other installed software. I have a fix for now, and that is to reinstall Mavericks from my recovery disk and not to allow Software Update to install Security Update 2015-007, but I hope that the next Security Update will not cause this same problem, now that you have given me a way to send Apple my concern and system profile info.

Resolved.  The security update did something to make iffy fonts break.  Mavericks wasn't as picky before the update, but after working with the developer bug reporter people, the problem was isolated to an old font suitcase (Bookman) that was probably a carry over from Mac OS 7 days.  Somehow, the name table got corrupted.  After extracting the fonts from the suitcase and repairing them by renaming them, my system is able to render and print correctly. A confounding problem was that almost all my documents were based on this particular font family.  This font was also installed on most of my computers.

So, if your documents start printing in rectangles, use Font Book to verify your fonts and repair or replace as needed.  Sorry it took so long to sort out, but the security update was innocent after all.

Having same problem.  Bookman the culprit, but I use it in EVERYthing.

How do I extract the fonts and repair as you say above?

    many thanks
