Securing the network wireless traffic is a function of the router that your friend has. The Router should have been accompanied by a manual that explains the functioning of the administration and setup. It is usually done through the internet browser.

I personally prefer Apple's Airport and Airport Time Capsule, as the Mac OS itself has a built-in administration application that is very easy and tailored to use with Macs.

The router should have a second line of defense in the ability to filter the MAC (media access layer) hardware network adapter addresses to only those computers that have access to the router, and exclude all others. Not to be used as a substitute, but rather as an additional layer of security to a (complicated) router password.
