Bringing up Apple Pay after location-based loyalty cards

I have Walgreen's Balance Rewards card in my Wallet, and it automatically comes up on my home screen when I'm near or in the store. When I go to pay, I swipe it to open it, but then there's no easy way to get to my debit or credit card for Apple Pay. I can't select another card from when my Balance Rewards card is pulled up, I can't lock and then double tap the home button (it just stays on the lock screen), I have to unlock my phone, navigate to the Wallet, and then select the card. It seems unnecessarily cumbersome. Any ideas as to how to fix this, or a way to contact the proper channels to report a bug?

Hi

At participating stores, if you turned on Automatic Selection on the pass, place your finger on Touch ID and hold your iPhone near the contactless reader when asked by the cashier or the terminal. Your rewards card will be applied to the purchase and payment will be made using your default payment card with Apple Pay.

I have my Balance Rewards card put into Wallet, and set to pop up at my usual Walgreens store, and in fact I see it pop up on the screen as I ApplePay the purchase (in fact, I think I recall seeing it pop up on my iPhone and/or Apple Watch as I enter the store, but I'm not 100% sure of that). Still, the Walgreens folks and the receipt both seem to say that my Balance Rewards card is not getting applied to the purchase.

Any thoughts on that?

What I do at Walgreens is to pull up the Rewards card at the register. They have a button they have to touch then hold your finger on the button with the card up. They have to finish the transaction then you pull up your payment card and hold near the reader and bingo it takes. No problem. I had to educate the clerks at our Walgreens on how it works. One in the Pharmacy still doesn't believe me.

OK, mystery solved for me! I poked around on YouTube, and found a video that demonstrated it. Ultimately, it's just a misunderstanding on my part.

The trick is that it's two transactions: One for the loyalty card, and then another for the purchase itself. I had assumed, incorrectly, that, once you setup your Balance Rewards card, it would automatically exchange that information as part of the one and only NFC transaction for the purchase itself. No, once you get it all set up correctly:

  • First the iPhone pops up the Balance Rewards card,
  • You NFC that card, then
  • The cashier totals up the purchase,
  • The iPhone pops up your credit/debit card, and
  • You NFC the purchase itself.

Well, actually there is still one mystery left: It's not working this or any other way on my Apple Watch. I'll keep looking into that...
