Mac Pro locks up, Watchdog Timeout Spin report?

Hi. I have a mac pro, 2009, running el Cap 10.11.1. It just locked up while scrolling in Safari. Mouse still worked and pointed, but no other functionality. Had to do hard restart. This has been happening to me since the Yosemite update, but I was hoping El Cap would have solved it. I guess not. It seems to be entirely random. It will lock up every couple of days, but work perfectly all the rest of the time. Always on Safari though. Fans will speed up as soon as it locks up.

THIS TIME, i noticed when going through the logs that I have three consecutive logs for userspace_watchdog_timeout.spin at the exact time the lockup occurred. All three generated in a 30 second window and you can see the fan rpms going up in each one.

But I can't figure out anything in those logs that is useful, or what to look for. Its a lot lot lot of lines so I don't want to just dump it in here unless invited by someone who will look at it. I don't even know if these watchdog logs are relevant. This is the SYSTEM.LOG for the last 2 minutes before I shut down. The mac stopped responding at 14:11, and a "watchdog" event is going on.

Can anyone see something in this? Should I post the watchdog system report or a section of it?

Please don't ask me to disable extensions or purge caches or any of that, I have done all the normal steps ad nauseum and still get these random freezes. I'm starting to maintain a log of everything i do and open apps and whatnot but no obvious link thus far. Thanks for any help.

I will follow this post as well, I'm also experiencing the same issue with 3/14/16 3:20:42.143 PM watchdogd[277]: [watchdog_daemon] @(_wd_daemon_service_thread) - service (com.apple.WindowServer) reported as unresponsive reported as unresponsive . It only occurs when I'm using Safari and and will end with the system locked but the mouse can scroll across the screen. The only remedy is a hard restart. I'm running a late 2009 iMac (2.66ghz Intel Core i5) with an ATI Radeon Hd 4850 512 MB graphics card. Reading through the thread this is the 3rd late 2009 iMac and most of the other computers are late model.

Mar 19, 2016 9:51 PM in response to Javier Bonafont

I am experiencing the same issue on Macbook Pro 15" Late 2015 El Capitan 10.11.3.

It happens only in Safari when I close a page with YouTube video in it.

It goes away by itself after half a minute - though Safari is working not very stable once this happens and only hardreset removes the quirks in Youtube playback after the initial freeze.

I used to have this issue several times per day, I did a clean install of ElCap and it went away for some time (about a month),

but now it seems to be back. Probably a hardware issue. Will take my laptop to the Apple store for diagnostics.

I just had failure of my graphics card. I brought the machine to the Apple Store and was informed that since its as a "Legacy" machine, late 2009 iMac, and there are no parts available. I was able to find a graphics card for $360 but I'm not sure if it is new or used...looks like used. After installation of at least $100 I'm over 50% of the value of the used machine. Does anyone have any tips? I think I'm going to need to buy a new machine.

There is no reliable guidance about this. Even though that computer is very familiar to you, that computer is just a tool, not a friend.

When Consumer Reports magazine discusses Appliances, they suggest that if the cost to repair exceeds 'half the cost of a new one', you are better off buying new.

Computers change MUCH faster than the Appliances they are talking about.

Hi, I'll also be following this post for any developments. I have the same freezing issues (...com.apple.WindowServer reported as unresponsive). Same Mac a few of the other posters, Late 2009 27" iMac with an ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB graphics card.

I haven't noticed a pattern yet, but it seems having Aperture open and using Facebook through Safari is almost assured to make it freeze. Today though, no Aperture, no Facebook, just Mail, Safari (Youtube) and iTunes.

Has anyone replaced their graphics card yet? Any idea on the cost (I'm in Canada)?

Mar 28, 2016 4:04 AM in response to migas

Migas, I looked into replacing the card on my late 2009 iMac but I was unable to find anyone to do it for me and I felt uncomfortable doing "surgery" on the iMac. I made it much easier and just dropped $1600 on a Apple Certified 27"iMac. 😢 Gutting the machine to get at the graphics card is not an easy procedure, but even more difficult, is trying to get a new graphics card.

Thanks jpg1582,

I may have to look at a similar way of dealing with mine. It's too bad because it's still fast enough for me and works great until it freezes. Unfortunately, I can't trust it as-is so something needs to be done. Just feels wasteful to replace it for one faulty part. This is one of the few times I miss having a diy windows tower: crack open, change GPU, done!

Mar 29, 2016 1:23 PM in response to Javier Bonafont

Got the same problem over here with a mid 2010 21.5" iMac running El Capitan 10.11.4

Doesn't look like there's a solution, and finding one is looking increasingly unlikely, but for comparisons sake, I'll include my trimmed console messages from the latest freeze.

Froze at 19:41 and I powered it down at 19:42. Powered it back up at 19:44.

Nothing that I can see that suggests what might have caused it to freeze, but maybe somebody else will notice something. Only thing I see is that Watchdog reported that WindowServer was unresponsive, which isn't very helpful.

Don't know if anyone's seen this already, but I saw a similar (much longer) thread about freezing up. Think they're having the same problem, but I might be wrong. They've also attributed it to Safari and YouTube.

Safari keeps crashing/freezing after install of El Capitan

The thread has also had attention from Apple themselves (Community Specialist and Linc Davis).
