Mac Pro locks up, Watchdog Timeout Spin report?

Hi. I have a mac pro, 2009, running el Cap 10.11.1. It just locked up while scrolling in Safari. Mouse still worked and pointed, but no other functionality. Had to do hard restart. This has been happening to me since the Yosemite update, but I was hoping El Cap would have solved it. I guess not. It seems to be entirely random. It will lock up every couple of days, but work perfectly all the rest of the time. Always on Safari though. Fans will speed up as soon as it locks up.

THIS TIME, i noticed when going through the logs that I have three consecutive logs for userspace_watchdog_timeout.spin at the exact time the lockup occurred. All three generated in a 30 second window and you can see the fan rpms going up in each one.

But I can't figure out anything in those logs that is useful, or what to look for. Its a lot lot lot of lines so I don't want to just dump it in here unless invited by someone who will look at it. I don't even know if these watchdog logs are relevant. This is the SYSTEM.LOG for the last 2 minutes before I shut down. The mac stopped responding at 14:11, and a "watchdog" event is going on.

Can anyone see something in this? Should I post the watchdog system report or a section of it?

Please don't ask me to disable extensions or purge caches or any of that, I have done all the normal steps ad nauseum and still get these random freezes. I'm starting to maintain a log of everything i do and open apps and whatnot but no obvious link thus far. Thanks for any help.

I have the same issue with my iMac at work. It's definitely strange because my issue just started around November 2016 with no major software changes (installs or otherwise).

iMac14,2 (27" Late 2013)

3.5GHz i7

32GB memory

NVIDIA GTX 780M 4GB

El Capitan 10.11.6

These lines in the console seem to be the most pertinent:

kernel[0]: stalling for detach from nvAccelerator

I get the window-freezes-but-mouse-still-moves without safari open. I use an iCloud photostream that has not had pictures added to it for over a year as my screensaver (and have used this screensaver for over a year).

I don't know the answer but I'm skeptical of the cause being hardware since the mouse is still moving. I use I do leave firefox and chrome open for days at a time. I use firefox for work with my company's internal websites that use a lot of javascript.

I'm going to try switching my screensaver to a local folder of pictures. If it still happens I'll try quitting the browsers each night and see if continues.

I have an interesting addition to my experience with two different 2009 27" iMacs experiencing this issue: Sierra 10.12 fixes it.

My daily work machine had been experiencing periodic Windowserver hangs through at least 10.10 and 10.11 as detailed in a previous post. I swapped the hard drive from that machine into another, otherwise identical 2009 27" iMac, and the problems continued. I also went through and removed or uninstalled absolutely anything older or possibly-funky that might be loading at startup or at the OS level, none of which helped. I had resolved to just live with it until I got a new computer.

Then I upgraded to Sierra (10.12.4 or 10.12.5). The problem went away. I used the computer for a full two months without a single hang, which had not happened in at least the past couple of years.

The original machine I had got a fresh copy of Sierra installed on it, and I have not heard any complaints from its users, either.

This isn't to say that Sierra will fix all permutations of this issue, but it unquestionably resolved mine. Technically, I don't know whether Sierra fixed a software bug, modified software such that it now recovers gracefully from a GPU hardware problem, or modified something about my user account or add-ons that was causing the issue and fixed it. But whichever of those three things it is, upgrading to Sierra was unquestionably what made the difference.

If you're having this problem and haven't tried Sierra yet for whatever reason, it can't hurt.

Oct 23, 2015 11:47 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

Hi Grant.

No, nothing "weird" on the screen (what qualifies as weird?) it just stops responding and the fans kick into a higher gear. I have an old 23" Apple Cinema Display that works perfect. the lockups always happen in Safari, not in any esoteric program. I run FCPX without incident, and Photoshop, etc. I don't use any strange programs or virtual machines or anything like that except very rarely and they never cause problems in any case. Often when scrolling, but not always. Recently I've installed a Click For Flash extension to prevent Flash from loading, because I suspected maybe it was a Flash/Safari issue but that seems to not be the case, the lockups continue. I don't have any other extensions loaded. When it freezes up, the curser remains able to move around, so the display is still refreshing (right?), but I can't click on anything or do anything with the keyboard.

What has always been peculiar is that it can run all day without an issue and the next day lock up three times and I can't for the life of me figure out what was different from day one to day two. Would the watchdog timeout report offer any clues as to what is happening?

Since you mention display issues, someone posted once a while back that they suspected that the ATI Radeon HD 4870 (which is what I have) was the culprit with some Yosemite issues, but I could never find any way to confirm or deny or test that. I didn't want to spring for a different card without knowing what it was that I had to change or avoid.

I appreciate any insight. I can post any logs or portions of logs if you think it will help at all. I used to boast, literally, that my Mac Pro had never crashed, which was true for the first few years I had it. Now, sadly, its a daily occurrence.

I have the same issue with my iMac (27", late 2009). It started in 10.9 and has persisted through 10.10 and 10.11. It almost always happens when using Safari, but I have also seen it when exiting from Time Machine. I can move the mouse pointer but can do nothing else. I have left it in this state overnight and the logs say that all the normal process continue to run. Time Machine even completes its hourly backups.

I was able to capture many sysidagnose reports during the frozen state and send them in to Apple engineering. Their first response was that they thought there might be a problem with Dropbox; they said to uninstall it. I did, but the freezes continued. I reported that to them, but they responded saying that they could see nothing else wrong in the logs. Because nothing was in the logs they didn't suspect a software problem.

I took my Mac in for service (erased the HDD first) and they found a problem with the HDD fan and replaced it. But they didn't believe that the freeze was caused by hardware, because I could still move the mouse pointer during the frozen state. After bringing the iMac home and restoring my data I didn't get the freeze for nearly a month, but then it started up again. Sometimes once or twice a day, sometimes once a week. The fan still checks out OK.

So Apple's hardware guys think it's software, but Apple's software guys disagree. I wish I knew what to do next.

P.S. I don't have a watchdog_timeout process in my logs at all.

Dec 30, 2015 8:17 AM in response to Javier Bonafont

I've got the same issue. Always with Safari as well!

There is some Safari error and the WindowServer is complaining about a window not being attached. Next time this happens I'll try to SSH into my machine and kill WindowServer.

The frustrating part about this is, that it is not reproducible. The only thing I suspect is that could be javascript related. Last time this happend, I was looking at a site that does does a lot of CSS and JavaScript tricks. (http://foundation.zurb.com/sites/docs/v/5.5.3/components/interchange.html)

Issue for me starting occurring with regularity this last week (Maybe after the 10.11.3 update?). I have a Mac Pro (Early 2008 & ATI Radeon HD 4870 with 27" Cinema Display). It will hard lock while surfing with Safari but whatever is playing in iTunes will continue until the song ends. Can still move the cursor but can't do anything other than force the machine to power down.

Console repeats this line during the hang:

"2/12/16 11:21:08.764 AM watchdogd[328]: [watchdog_daemon] @(_wd_daemon_service_thread) - service (com.apple.WindowServer) reported as unresponsive"

Hmm. . .

Feb 19, 2016 6:54 AM in response to My User Name was Taken

I also have the ATI Radeon HD 4870.

I have heard some isolated rumors that it is this card that has conflicts. But I can't confirm that, nor get an answer about what would be the best card to replace it with. I would happily replace the card if I knew that was the problem and there was a better card.

Additional Info: I have discovered that if I have FCPX running in another space or just open doing nothing, I can get Safari to lock up within an hour, tops. I work in video a lot, so its a **** condition to have to shut down FCPX whenever I have to look something up on the web, or find an image, or something, but that is what I do now. If I do that, the situation is relatively stable. But if I have both things open a crash is guaranteed. I'm not sure what this means for a solution, but I sent this info to Apple feedback.

Feb 19, 2016 9:41 PM in response to marxist_de

Same story with a 2009 iMac., OS X 10.11.1. Works great until this happens. Mouse still moves, but clicks and keyboard do nothing. Everything still working in background, iTunes even keeps playing Internet Radio, etc! While I'm glad I'm not the only one, it would be great if Apple fixed it. I believe I've had this happen all the way back to 10.9!

I traced it down to these console entries as well.
