How do I get my printer from "offline" to "online"?

Trying to print, but box comes up saying "The printer is not connected." Underneath that is says "Printing - The printer is offline." This happens all the time, even after I manage to get to print something, the next time I go back, this happens. Now I'm not too tech savvy, so go easy on me, but I figure that if there is a setting that I'm missing that would keep the printer usable, one of you boffins will be able to put me, and my wife, out of our misery. Thanks

Visit the manufacture website for your printer and look for drivers (software) that is compatible with the Mac OS X installed on your Mac. You need to download those drivers.

To see which OS X is installed, click your Apple  menu top left in your screen.

From the drop down menu click: About this Mac

Example: OS X El Capitan

Version 10.11.1

After you download the drivers, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners then select the Print tab then click ➕ under the Printers panel on the left to add your printer.
