Terminal: How do I stop Automatic Graphics Switching setting automatically reverting
Is there a command to prevent the system from re-enabling "Auto Graphics Switching"?
Mid-2010 MBP 10.6.8
Nvidia GT330M

You nailed it.
It's the 6,2 MBP
I have read about this issue, and saw that the board replacement program expired before I got there.
Bad luck. Was hoping a software end-run might solve it.
If it's just a logic board, is it soldered in or slotted in? How can I identify it when speaking to Apple?
I'm searching it right now.
As you know this MBP is getting on. But I like it. Actually love is a more accurate descriptor.
Getting frustrating though. I have a 2008 Mac Pro running SL server, love it too but have no upgrade path.
My wife's MBP, early 2011 upgraded all the way to mavericks. Go figure.
Can't seem to get the mountain lion software I bought to install on mine, now it's disappeared from the app store... and on it goes.
Unfortunately, the gfx.io won't work on 10.6.8.
looks like I'm hooped; caught in the Apple refusal to continue supporting legacy hardware, just buy more, throw the rest in the landfill, its a shame really, I think Jobs is weeping somewhere to see what this is becoming.
I appreciate your expertise!
No that doesn't solve it but thanks.
Something is reverting the setting on its own and this is leading to kernel panic.
I want to know where in the OS I can edit something to permanently disable the feature and be done with it.
With the mid-2010 MBP & 10.6.8, having the NVidia GT330M card, a bug causes a kernel panic and hard power cycle is required to restore
This is becoming a real pain and I can't find a fix for it.
I need to know where to permanently disable Automatic Graphics Switching beneath the GUI
thanks!
I suspect that you may have a 15", model identifier 6,2 MBP that is having GPU problems. There was a replacement program on these models but that has expired.
You have the following options:
You may have the logic board replaced but it will be at your expense.
You may download and install the following application which will enable you to disengage the discrete GPU and operate with only the integrated one. This will be at the expense of graphics performance.
I know of no way of altering the OSX to disable the discrete GPU.
Ciao.

The GPU is soldered to the logic board. You either replace the logicboard or perhaps consider a 'reflow' which is high risk with no guarantees.

If you have purchased Mt. Lion, it should be in your App store account. Have you checked 'hidden purchases'?
Ciao.
I watched some of the reflow vids out there, I'm afraid I had to scoff a bit though it sounds like some have had good luck with it. Seems pretty hit and miss, with as you note, high risk.
The app store, yes I checked hidden purchases, its just gone. The last download I got of it is corrupted and won't load.
Interesting that the problem emerged about six months or so ago. Was a dream machine until then. I use VPN and Fusion daily and that is where it began to show up. It's very annoying that I can set the switch in the GUI and set the lock to "prevent any changes" and then each time this occurs, on restart I look into the preferences and find that the lock is open and the setting is changed back to enable auto graphics switching.
I read widely last night regarding the i/o board replacement and it seems it has given very mixed results. For some the problem got worse and for others there was no change. While for a few it appears to have resolved the issues they were having.
I suppose I'll have to order a board and see how it goes. Cheaper than a new mac and I've no intention of ever buying a windows machine. I doubt after recent experiences that I will buy a new mac again either. Feeling a bit trapped.
thanks for your help!

I just checked my hidden purchases and my copy of Mt. Lion was there. Why that is the case with you, I cannot answer. Since I have made USB installation drives for all OSX's from Lion to through El Capitan, for me that is not an important issue. I suggest that you contact Apple and query them why your copy of Mt. Lion is not available.
If you do choose to get a replacement logic board, keep the old one and try a reflow. At that point you have nothing to lose.
Ciao.
