Q: From recovery mode and iCloud restore most third party apps crashes

Following instructions from Apple Support, I have taken the phone into recovery mode, and clicked the Restore and Update (maybe Update and Restore?). When returning to the Hello screen, iTunes doesn't offer restore from iCloud backup. The device itself however, allows me to restore from my iPhone 6s backup made from the 6s I had to return due to faulty hardware.

During restore, the iPhone always hangs on the white screen with a black Apple. No progress bar, not animations, no text - only the logo. It stays in that state for as long as I leave it there (I have let it stand connected to charger for more than 7 hours with no change in state). So, I see no other way forward then a forced restart. When booted up, the backup restore seems to continue as expected.

However, the frustrating end result after iCloud restore completes has so far to always been the same: most third party apps on the device crashes on launch. This seems to be all the apps with data restored from iCloud (i.e. some games with no iCloud state launches and runs fine).

To make matters worse, the problems isn't limited to the iPhone. Also the Apple Watch - which I also restore from the backup - appears to have problems communicating Health data to the iPhone. The Health settings (body weight, height, etc) doesn't seem to get saved on the iPhone; at least after an entire day of walking and exercising with the Watch, the Activity app on the iPhone still says something like "to get started setup Activities on the Apple Watch" (which I obviously have done).

The conclusion - as far as I can tell, is to do a clean install on both iPhone and Watch and manually install all apps and accept the loss of all cloud data. Which of course is frustrating (pictures taken inside third party apps are lost, game progress lost, settings and prefs for hundreds of apps lost).

Does anyone have a (better) solution?
