Apple Hardware Test doesn't start iMac late 2009

Hi everyone, I can't use the Apple Hardware Test on a iMac 27'' late 2009 with El Capitan installed. I don't have the original disk with the OS, even if I don't think it's needed because, following the Apple instructions Apple Diagnostic is built into Mac. ( OS X El Capitan: Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test) I've tried with and without ethernet cable, but it doesn't show anything when I turn on the Mac. Can someone please tell me what do I have to do, to make Apple Diagnostic or Apple Hardware Test work on my Mac, thanks.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1), Apple Hardware Test

The Apple Hardware Test is on disc 2 of your original gray install set, it is NOT built into El Capitan. Since you no longer have your install discs you can see if your version of AHT is listed for download here https://github.com/upekkha/AppleHardwareTest

I have a mid-2009 20" imac, and cannot get it to run the hardware test software. I've tried inserting the original #2 disc that came with the computer, and restarting while holding down the D key, but all it does is go to a grey screen, then the display flickers a couple times before going solid black. If anybody can help, I'd be very grateful.
