What is the definition of the finder search attribute titled "Alternate Display Names?" I found that adding that criteria to my "Recent 1 Day" finder smart folder eliminates Vcard files from appearing, and solves that issue for me. I just don't understand why it works.

The spotlight metadata attributes have a kMDItemDisplayName which is the localized name of the file. I'm not sure if it is the same thing, but there isn't an AlternateDisplayName attribute, so I think it is the same. I can't exactly explain why it eliminates those files, but I would assume they don't have a localized name as they are named with a unique ID.
It would be easier to find the files I'm looking for if the search criteria was broader to include variables like "is not" and "does not contain". Some attributes include those, but not many. Are there third party add ons for modifying the search criteria? I do see some that were added by apps I have installed.
FWIW, if you add a search attribute with the + button to a Finder search & select "Other" from the popup attribute list, "Alternate display names" is one of them:
