Removing HP MediaSmart Server (hpMSSAgent)

Years ago I used to run HP MediaSmart Server on my Macbook Air (mid-2012), but not for a long time now. I still have the "HP Media Smart Server" icon in System Preferences, but it fails to load when clicking on it. More annoyingly, there is a process running called hpMSSAgent which occasionally goes absolutely haywire and starts consuming up to 80% of my CPU. When I quit the process, it immediately reappears.

I want to just get rid of everything related to HP MediaSmart, but there is no application to delete. There is also no login item to unselect under "Users". I think there was an uninstaller in the original MediaSmart Client software (dmg), and there seems to be no way of downloading it from HP. Anyone else have this problem, or any advice?

Thanks,

Alex

This is NOT the question that I asked. There are already many posts that contain this link, which assumes you have the server running or have the install disk for the server.

The question I asked was where to download the .dmg or .pkg file necessary to completely uninstall the software associated with the (new unsupported) HP MediaSmart Server from a Mac. At one time I had one of these servers but it died. Now I have two services running on my mac that don't do anything but chew up CPU time.

FWIW, I never could find the download, so I nuked this directory: /Library/Frameworks/HPMSSMacClient.framework and rebooted. Somewhere I suspect there is an entry that attempts to launch the service at startup and fails pretty quickly, but the services are no longer running.

A couple of days after trying my "nuclear" approach I have seen no ill after effects.

I started a command line window, then

$ su

(enter administrator password)

$ rm -r /Library/Frameworks/HPMSSMacClient.framework

$ exit

[restart the mac]

Obviously you need to be VERY CAREFUL with the rm -r command. You are working without a net.
