emu 0404

I have been using EMU0404 for sound output - it's connected to my iMac by USB and outputs sound from my computer to speakers. After upgrading to OS X 10.11, El Capitan, the E-MU 0404 is gone from the list of output devices.

There is a USB audio control panel application, provided by Creative, which used to detect the device and do some basic configuration, but now it does not detect anything.

Any way to fix this?

I'm sorry for the bad news, but it is the new system files protection in OS X 10.11 that breaks the EMU USB 0404 driver and EMU will NOT update the driver because of the END OF LIFE status of the product. Here's their reply to my question:

"""

Thank you for contacting E-MU support.

We are sorry to inform you that we no longer have further upgrades, software updates, and drivers for our End of Service Life (EOSL) products.

The E-MU 0404 USB has been classified as one of the EOSL products, and the last driver update we have for this product is for OS X Snow Leopard and OS X Lion.

You may want to consider to use your Time Machine Backup to downgrade your Mac to a lower OS X version so that your device can work again.

It drives me mad, because all they need to do to make it work again is SIGN the driver....

You can disable system integrity protection from kernel extensions only to install the drivers and they seem to work just fine. Other sources on the web tell you to disable the whole thing but you only really need to disable it for kext. So if you really need 0404 and choose to use a bit less secure system this is how:

Reboot to recovery mode (hold CMD-R when rebooting)

Open terminal and type csrutil enable --without kext

Reboot

Go to System Preferences - Security and Privacy and 'Allow applications downloaded from: Anywhere'

Install the latest drivers for EMU 0404

Of course this is not considered safe, it's your own risk. This is the same method developers use to test and develop their own kernel extensions before they are actually signed.
