iOS9 Airplay stops on standby and auto-lock

Since upgrading to iOS9 I have noticed Airplay audio playback to stop when putting the device in locked or standby mode.

This does not happen on iOS devices which still run on iOS8.

Playback stops when the device is connected via AirPlay, either by:

1. Pressing the standby/power/lock button

2. Letting the iPhone go into Auto-Lock

Besides Airplay, this also happens when the iPhone is:

1. Connected to headset

2. Connected to USB audio externals

3. Connected to Bluetooth audio externals

The audio will remain playing when locked:

- When using the iPhone speaker

This applies to:

- All audio. Podcasts, Apple Music, Beats1 Radio, Spotify and more.

Resetting the phone will not solve it.

Has a new feature/setting been added to iOS9?

Has anyone noticed the same 'feature'?

Is there a workaround to get the iPhone to keep playing when locked?

Apple Support: we don't know if this is by design or not.

I have no idea why you would ever want to 'overpower' a user that has selected to play music over airplay, but it seems this might actually be a feature of iOS9.

Leaving your iPhone unlocked all the time to play some music via AirPlay seems so ridiculous.
