Q: iOS 9.1 unable to search contacts

I have an iPhone6, I upgraded to iOS9.1 yesterday and today I am unable to search in Contacts app or for Contacts in the Phone app

I am able to search contacts from Messages.

I am able to search contacts from spotlight search.

I was running iOS 9.0.2 prior.

I am Exchange tethered.

Anyone else?

Yes same problem. Though don't know if problem existed prior to update from 9.0.2. My contacts are backed up to iCloud. The search does not recognize the contacts. I rebooted - no help. I turned off contact synch in iCloud. That removed all contacts from phone. Then I turned on and restored. Re- booted again.

Sill an issue. Let me know if you resolve. Will do same. Also turned off restriction under contacts to allow safari to access. Someone suggested. No help.

I have the EXACT same problem.  Further, I'm also unable to open my phone with with my code the first time I try.

I have an iphone 5 Model A 1532.  It ran perfectly... until these last two updates.

9.1 fixed some of the last update's issues, and left me with a totally new set of issues.  Not being able to search contacts or open the phone... these are big issues.

I also did the fixes suggested in the post above. They did not help.

Can't help with the passcode but apparently you resolved as you opened the phone. With respect to the search of contacts, the fix I found and used successfully was to go to settings -general -reset and then reset all settings. It's a pain but does not remove media or data. Worked for me.

Sadly, this did not help.  Oh well.  Probably needed to reset some of that other stuff anyway.

And the not opening thing... it will open if you lock your phone and try to re-open a 2nd time.  Still not very good, if you have to open your phone 2x each time.

Today I performed the following in this order......with no success in correcting the search in Contacts app or Contacts in the Phone app

    1. I did an iOS reinstalled/update from recovery mode (If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support)
    2. I did a complete local backup in iTunes
    3. I did Erase All Content and Settings
    4. I did a restore of backup with iTunes

I will disable the Exchange tether later and post the results.

    Best regards...

Final update with a solution....hope this works for you too.

I opened a ticket with Apple support today.  Gave them this thread stating what I have done to date.

My mistake was restoring from backup.  The backup must have been corrupt.

So today I performed the following in this order and now have a fully working work.

**Warning this procedure wipes out all settings and content from a phone; have alternate methods to recover data without using iCloud or iTunes backup**

    1. I backed up pictures.
    2. I recorded my Exchange credentials, iCloud settings, Sounds and Vibration Patterns (from settings>general>sounds)
    3. I performed Erase All Content and Settings (How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups - Apple Support)
    4. I performed an iOS reinstalled/update from recovery mode (If you can't update or restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support)
    5. I setup my freshly reloaded iPhone as a new device.

After syncing back up to Exchange I am now able to search from within Phone app and Contacts app and there are no other anomalies.

    This solved my problem.

It is important to note I am an Exchange tethered.  That means all my email, contacts and calendar entires reside on a corporate server somewhere.  Backup of this data is not required and is restored to the phone as soon as I enter all my credentials.

If it solves your problem, pay it forward and post a reply for someone else see.

    Best regards....

    Hi!

That can only be an interim solution. It worked all the years. Now several people with Exchange Accounts have the problem.

It stopped searching and syncing with the Exchange Server. I deleted the account and it worked one time. Now it stopped again.

This is clearly a bug which needs to be adressed by Apple.

I'm not willing to delete all my settings.

    Hope it gets fixed soon.

    Greetings

    I agree completely.

Calling it a solution that requires you to wipe out your phone and bypass a restore from backup, hardly qualifies as a solution.

I am not entirely sure Exchange contributed to this problem it may well have been my companies Mobile Device Management (MDM) policy for Exchange users.

Being an IT engineer myself; I have been guilty of creating a few of these problems.

    Best regards...

    Did help on 5s.

It's definitely worth losing some time to change back sounds and background compared to the irritating glitch.

Did not loose anything significant but message sound defaulted, background and live tiles from what I see so far.

    Thanks!

IT IS BROKEN!  and very annoying.     The only real workaround is to swipe from left to right

and use that search feature.   It will find things in more than just Contacts but at least it works.

I don't have time to backup and restore just so I can search contacts.

    APPLE NEEDS TO FIX THIS.

Hey Kale there is surely something corrupted as the result of the iOS upgrade that can only be remedied by wiping it out with an iOS reinstall process.

If your contacts is the only real major thing you have to backup you should consider using iCloud if you are not already.  If you are using iCloud following that procedure I posted previously will solve this problem.

You will set it up as a new iPhone and after signing back into iCloud and configuring Contacts to use iCloud everything will sync back.

    Best of luck to you
