Q: help please with bootcamp ISO on macbook air 11" 2015

will mac tech help me out with boot camp if i am within my 60 days or whatever?

anyway, OK. first off i admit it. every time i go to do a windows installation using boot camp i feel like i'm from the stone age and can never get this to work on my own.

so - i have a new 2015 11" macbook air and a mac pro and a windows 8 install disk and various USB sticks.

i /have/ previously created a driver USB disk for windows 8 when i did my mac pro installation of boot camp but i am not really sure if i need to create a NEW ONE when i do the install routine on the macbook air.

ALSO, i put the disk into the mac pro and tried to make an ISO on the USB to do the install on the air but i am not sure i understand this. i got to the point where i created the file on the desktop by selecting the CR ROM (i assume this is correct) and then i got to the point where i changed the file extension from cdr to iso. however, i seem to have one or two iso files on the desktop and when i try to EJECT the USB i don't think this is happening. i guess i should delete these other ones?

WHAT SHOULD i see on the USB with the iso file extension?

also, WHY is the air giving me an error telling me it does not see anything compatible to do the install?

FINALLY - am i correct in only selecting the LAT option in the boot camp dialog box?

OR do i also need to check the second box to download drivers for THIS computer (i mean, can i just use the one i created for the mac pro).

AND do i need to check the first option?

i'm obviously at a lost...

THANKS

    LT,

can i please follow up with you here?

i am booting into safe mode and i get a bit of a static-y screen and then it shows the red "safe mode" in the top right hand corner and i log into my normal user i guess? then everything looks the same as normal boot mode?

then i start boot camp and i select the iso file in my documents folder and i get an error that says yosemite will only install windows 8 or later.

so my thought now is to redo the iso on the Mac Pro and to move this to the Air via USB again and to see if this helps.

however the instructions are uber confusing.

    A. am i supposed to select the "SuperDrive" icon with "IR5_CCA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9" name that is underneath? and then i click on "New Image" and select the pulldown to DVD/CD Master, yes?

    B. it says to "select the USB optical drive or Windows flash drive..." but this is only if i am creating an iso using an external DVD connected to the mac air right? i mean in my case i am creating the ISO on my Mac Pro and moving it to the air after copying it to the USB stick, yes?

    C. if so, my file is named IR5_CCSA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9.cdr and i then CHANGE the extension to .iso, yes? and i COPY it to a USB stick, and then copy that to the documents folder on my air?

    thanks.

Use these steps to make an ISO copy of your Windows DVD or USB flash drive:

    1. While your Mac is started from OS X, insert the Windows installation DVD in an external optical USB drive or connect your Windows USB drive to a USB port on your Mac.
    2. After the install media mounts in the Finder, open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder (choose Go > Utilities).
    3. Select the USB optical drive or Windows flash drive so it's highlighted in the Disk Utility window.
    4. Click the New Image icon at the top of the Disk Utility window.
    5. Choose DVD/CD master from the Image Format menu, then choose none from the Encryption menu.

    6. Give the new file a name, then click Save. The Creating Image window appears with a progress bar. It might take some time to create an image file from your Windows install media.
    7. After imaging is done, select the Windows install media in the disk list, then click the Eject button at the top of the Disk Utility window.

ALSO, what do you make of the fact that the file is 4.32 GB and when i try to move it to a newly formatted USB stick that is 32 GB i get an error that says that the file is too big to move to the USB stick?

edit: ach, i was formatting the USB stick as FAT32. now it is journaled extended. let's see how i do now....

Windows will not boot from a GPT/HFS+ volume. Your ISO has an individual file larger than 4GB. It should not have it. The ISO DVD source needs to be looked at. If it has a mixed 32-bit/64-bit Windows Installer, you will see this issue.

Please download the ISO you need from https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/home directly.

    hi LT.

    THANK YOU.

this seems to have been (partly) user error in my creation of the cdr/iso file. i seem to have gotten yosemite to install a boot camp partition in the normal fashion after going back and doing this again on the mac pro.

i see you have linked to an MS site for a direct download and i assume that i would download this to my OSX drive, give them a serial number and that this may have been a more direct route.

in any event, can i please ask you what is on my USB stick now that i have installed? i mean, or originally it was a iso file that was really a renamed cdr file that was created from my DVD ROM - but what is on there now and do i need to retain this information?

ALSO, how is this info different from the /drivers/ that i used to download to USB stick and still have for win 7, win XP etcetera?

    THANKS

OK. sorry. one more here please? what do i do to upgrade boot camp installs of win 8 to win 10?

if i have a boot camp install of win 8.1 on my air and my mac pro - do i format a USB stick as FAT 32 and download the windows 10 install disk that seems to be named "Win10_English_x64.iso" and then boot into win 8.1 and doubleclick the iso file?

the upgrade seems to be free based upon the time i have purchased 8.1 (or free generally) but i am not sure how i procedurally go through the upgrade...

    THANKS

Your USB is a 'full' installer which contains a WinPE for your specific Mac, and the contents of  the ISO needed. You can verify that in Finder. The Drivers you download do not contain any Windows installer components.

Please see Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support . You can download the "Win10_English_x64.iso" directly to the W8.1 form the Internet and double-click and open it and run setup.exe on the ISO. This is an in-place upgrade without any involvement of BCA.

If you used BCA and the ISO to build an installer, you need to ensure the BC Drivers are 6.x and your Mac supports W10.

ok, so this USB does have the drivers but it also has the "WinPE" which takes the place of the DVD's. and i should label this as my mac air win 8 installer in case i need to do a re-install.

    have i got it?

    hi LT,

both the macs seem to accept 10. thanks.

on the Mac Pro - do you know if I can upgrade the drive with windows 7 on it that already has my applications and UI installed on it? I also have a new drive on the Mac Pro with windows 8 on it that I bought but there are no apps installed or UI set up. this question doesn't matter on the air since everything on it is new but if upgrading 7 is an option it may make sense. of course I have to factor in that I would lose my windows 7 install I think...

WinPE is not DVD, it is just he PrebootEnvironment. This contains the drivers necessary to make your Apple-specific hardware to work during the installation phase.

Your USB installer may work on other Macs, but it is not recommended.

MPs before 2013 do not support Windows 10 - Use Windows 10 on your Mac with Boot Camp - Apple Support .

    er, wait.

so i have the DVD for windows 8.1 but it won't fit into my air (no drive) and i don't have an external USB drive to plug in to the machine. so you are saying that rather than create the iso from the DVD put into my mac pro (using disk utility) and put it on a USB to /move/ it to the air - i need to download the iso from the internet while in yosemite on the air and then start BCA?

i mean, if i have done the former do i need to redo this boot camp installation?

also, would it be better to download a win 10 iso and go straight to windows 10 on the air?

W10 upgrade is free, but a clean install the first time requires a new license.

ok. sorry. this stuff i find aggravating.

so i have 10 installed on the 2015 mac air using windows 8.1 iso and then running the upgrade and i have windows 7 pro installed on the mac pro 2012.

if i go back and create an iso of windows 7 pro and install it on the air (instead of the windows 8.1) and then upgrade for free to windows 10 pro can i DROP DOWN back to windows 7 pro on the macbook air?

i mean since i can't stand win 8.1 - even though i could load it on the mac pro 2012 - and since i can't load windows 10 on the mac pro i would have to run windows 7 on the mac air if i wanted to run the same OS's.

in which case i would have to redo the installation on the macbook air to windows 7 i suppose...?

as i think about this i wonder if there is an advantage to installing win 7 pro boot so that i get the free upgrade to windows 10 pro and ALSO the ability to drop back to windows 7 in case i want to run the same OS's on each computer...

The minimum Windows on the 2015 MBA is 8.1. You cannot install W7. What is the version of W10 on the MBA - Home or Pro?

W8 is path to W10 on the MBA which is Free.

You have 30 days to roll back W10 to the previous version (W7 or W8), and only once.

    ach.

answers first: so right now i have windows 10 /home/ on the 2015 macbook air.

    ok. i forgot.

i /can't/ install windows 7 on the 2015 mac air. and i /can't/ install windows 10 on the 2012 mac pro (where i currently have windows 7 pro installed via DVD).

so this means i cannot install windows 7 pro on the mac air to upgrade to windows 10 pro and i HAVE to use the windows 8.1 DVD (to create the iso) to install 8.1 on the mac air and then i can upgrade to windows 10 HOME and then pay to upgrade to windows 10 pro if i need/want it?

alternatively i can ask these guys at the MS store to take back the 8.1 DVD since i now understand that i can't use it on the 2012 mac pro and since i don't really need it on the mac air - since i should/could really BUY windows 10 PRO on the air and install it.

    have i got it right?

i mean, sounds like i am going to be running two different win OS's whether i like it or not... ; (
